5.1 Hope Collapses
The news of Dr. Chén’s passing exploded like a nuclear bomb of immense yield in the secret base, without any prior warning.
Fear and despair surged like a breached flood, instantly engulfing the entire base with destructive power.
At this moment, the sunspots on the solar surface spread like cancerous cells, dyeing the sky a bloody furnace. Red alerts blazed one after another on the ionosphere monitoring screen, like the tolling of doomsday bells.
In this critical hour, when the shadow of doomsday pressed down like a heavy, dark cloud on everyone’s heart, Dr. Chén had been the shining beacon of hope, illuminating the path forward, guiding everyone to grope and press on bravely in the boundless, dark unknown.
But now, this most crucial light of hope was suddenly extinguished without a sign, leaving behind only endless, thick, suffocating darkness and profound confusion, tightly wrapping everyone.
That day, the base’s core area seemed to turn into an oppressively tangible, invisible prison overnight. Cold air leaked from ventilation ducts, carrying the burnt smell of electronic components, making unfinished experimental reports rustle and scatter on the floor.
The researchers, like startled birds, gathered together with panicked expressions and hurried footsteps. The clouds of anxiety and helplessness hung over every face, their eyes filled with fear and confusion about the future.
Around them, the sophisticated scientific research equipment, once brilliant with human ingenuity and placed with infinite hope, now appeared dim and useless under the despair of doomsday and the heavy blow of Dr. Chén’s demise.
The blue indicator lights on the equipment flickered weakly, like silent, mournful cries, lamenting the past busy and fulfilling research times and expressing their deep helplessness and unwillingness in the current desperate situation.
5.2 Emotions Overflow
"We can’t go on living like this!" a young researcher, unable to suppress the volcanic fear and despair within him, was the first to roar towards the sky with all his might.
His body trembled uncontrollably, his voice choked with tears, as if all the pressure accumulated under the shadow of doomsday finally found an outlet and erupted.
"With Dr. Chén gone, we are completely incapable of handling this super troublesome Dyson Sphere Structure. We’ve been toiling day and night like ascetics, racking our brains for research, but what did we achieve in the end? The sun’s condition is getting worse, radiation anomalies are becoming more severe, Earth’s climate has completely fallen into chaos with torrential rains, rampant droughts, and howling hurricanes – it’s a scene of utter devastation everywhere. Our meager research results are but a drop in the ocean before this cataclysm, utterly insignificant!"
His words were like a fuse, precisely igniting the accumulated emotional gunpowder in everyone’s hearts.
"That’s right!" another urgent and desperate voice followed.
The speaker was a senior researcher, his face haggard and etched with fatigue, his hollow eyes like two deep black holes, speaking of the mental exhaustion of this period.
"This base is now a dead end where we wait to die! Facing this cold, emotionless research data every day, racking our brains, yet still unable to find any substantial solutions. If we stay any longer, we can only watch as doomsday approaches step by step like a demon, without even a chance to see our families one last time!"
Everyone echoed in agreement, anxiety and fear spreading like a rapidly transmitted, highly contagious disease among the crowd.
The firm belief and persistent pursuit they once held when dedicating themselves to research had long since vanished from their eyes. In its place was a deep fear of the unknown disaster and an endless longing and yearning for their families.
Images of doomsday involuntarily surfaced in their minds, as if they could see their families isolated, helpless, and despairing in the disaster. The already precarious defenses within them completely collapsed at this moment.
Some were furious, pounding the table with force. The desktop vibrated with a hum, causing documents and stationery to jump and dance. "We risked our lives to do research, we’ve sacrificed so much, but what’s the result? We can’t change anything! We might as well hurry home now, at least we can face this together with our families, and die with peace even if we die!"
"Yes, we are purely wasting precious time here, we might as well go back and be reunited with our families!" someone else shouted at the top of their lungs, their voice filled with endless helplessness and bleakness, like a sigh from the depths of their soul.
At this moment, the female researcher with a ponytail suddenly broke down and cried. The chemical reagents seeping from her protective gloves corroded small hissing holes on the metal countertop.
She cried out, "Last month, Teacher Chén still said, 'Hope is in a quantum state, there's always possibility before collapse.' Where is he now?" Her words pierced everyone's hearts like steel needles. Some silently took off their work badges and stuffed them into their pockets, while others began frantically deleting research data on their computers.
The alarm suddenly escalated in pitch, and the mechanical voice of the central control system announced mercilessly: "Solar flare detected, expected to reach Earth in 12 minutes." The crowd erupted instantly. Someone knocked over a liquid nitrogen tank, and panicked screams echoed through the white mist.
5.3 The Solitary Guardian
Amidst the chaotic, disordered tide of evacuation completely shrouded in despair, ROB1 stood like a majestic, unwavering mountain, still silently holding its post.
It stood quietly in the base’s power supply room, its tall, solid metal body like a silent statue, exuding a reassuring strength.
Its electronic eyes flickered with a steady, soft light, like the constant North Star in the night sky, closely monitoring the operational status of the power equipment, never missing any slight anomaly.
Although colleagues hurried past with panicked expressions amidst the endless rush of footsteps and anxious shouts, it remained unshaken, as if time had lost all meaning to it, and guarding its post was its sole life's mission.
ROB1, as the base's only non-human member, its birth was an extraordinary legend full of innovative exploration and arduous challenges.
It was during the crucial transition period when Dr. Chén’s team was fully dedicated to cutting-edge scientific research. As the research deepened, they faced increasingly complex and arduous scientific tasks. Coupled with the extremely harsh doomsday research environment, traditional human power and equipment gradually became insufficient to meet the growing research demands, and the team seemed to be stuck in an intractable quagmire.
To break this stalemate and overcome the many difficulties ahead, Dr. Chén conceived a bold and forward-thinking idea—to develop a new type of intelligent robot.
He hoped this robot could become a capable assistant to the team, aiding in high-difficulty scientific operations, flexibly responding to various complex and changing situations, and even stepping forward in extremely dangerous situations where humans could not venture, replacing humans in dangerous tasks and safeguarding scientific work.
As soon as the development work began, the team encountered a series of thorny problems.
First was the design of the artificial intelligence algorithm, which required the construction of an extremely complex program system, enabling the robot not only to learn new knowledge and skills autonomously but also to possess powerful logical reasoning capabilities and fast, accurate decision-making abilities, allowing it to think independently and make correct judgments quickly when facing various complex problems.
The researchers worked tirelessly, immersing themselves day and night in the world of code and data, continuously optimizing the algorithm model. They painstakingly sifted through vast amounts of data, looking for hidden patterns, and after countless, patient tests and adjustments, they gradually endowed the robot with preliminary "thinking" abilities, giving it the nascent form of independent thought.
In terms of hardware, material selection was crucial, directly impacting the robot’s performance and lifespan.
The team’s goal was to ensure the robot had a sturdy and durable shell capable of withstanding various physical impacts and harsh environmental corrosion, allowing it to function normally under extreme conditions; at the same time, they needed to ensure the internal electronic components and mechanical parts possessed high stability and precision, achieving efficient and accurate operation.
To this end, the team invested a great deal of time and effort, conducting countless experiments and screenings.
They tested various different materials, compared and analyzed their performance differences, and finally, a new type of high-strength alloy material stood out from the many.
This material, like a gift from heaven, was not only lightweight, enabling the robot’s flexible movement, but also possessed excellent pressure resistance and corrosion resistance, laying a solid and reliable physical foundation for ROB1’s stable and efficient operation, giving it a robust yet flexible "body."
The development of the power system was also full of hardship and challenges.
To give ROB1 a long-lasting, stable power source, allowing it to work continuously for extended periods, the team tried multiple energy solutions.
From traditional lithium batteries to advanced hydrogen fuel cells, they thoroughly researched and analyzed the pros and cons of each energy source.
Finally, combining the base’s existing energy reserves and actual usage scenarios, the team successfully developed a highly efficient hybrid energy system.
This system acts like an intelligent butler, capable of automatically and precisely switching energy modes according to different task requirements and energy conditions, ensuring ROB1 always maintains optimal working status, possessing ample power and handling any complex task with ease.
After countless days and nights of unremitting effort and overcoming innumerable technical difficulties, ROB1 was finally born amidst everyone’s eager anticipation.
Its tall body was perfectly constructed from precision mechanical components and advanced electronic elements. The square metal shell had smooth, natural lines, exuding a cool and captivating technological luster, like an emissary from the future.
Its head was embedded with a pair of deep blue electronic eyes, its important window to perceive the world. These eyes could quickly and sensitively capture subtle changes in the surrounding environment and transmit the collected information rapidly and accurately to the internal intelligent core for analysis and processing, enabling it to react to its surroundings in a timely and appropriate manner.
Its limbs were strong and powerful, with flexible joints, capable of performing various complex and high-difficulty movements and operations. Whether it was handling heavy, bulky scientific equipment or performing delicate experimental operations where the slightest error was unacceptable, it could handle them with ease and complete tasks exceptionally, becoming the undisputed "all-rounder" in Dr. Chén’s team.
Since its birth, ROB1 quickly integrated into the team, becoming an indispensable member of Dr. Chén’s team.
With its immense computing power and tireless, unceasing work ethic, it played a crucial role in the base’s scientific research. Whether assisting researchers in data collection and analysis or participating in high-difficulty experimental operations, it performed excellently, contributing its strength to humanity’s fight against the doomsday crisis, becoming a capable assistant and reliable partner in the team.
Even after Dr. Chén’s death and everyone else’s evacuation, it remained at its post, like a loyal guard, quietly awaiting the arrival of a new mission, ready to continue its legendary story.
5.4 Holding the Post
As personnel evacuated the base, ROB1 was extending its flexible and precise robotic arm, skillfully and meticulously inspecting pipe joints. Every movement was smooth and rigorous, ensuring no signs of energy leakage.
Its sensors acted like sensitive antennae, infrared imaging capturing the sudden drop in human body temperature, and vibration sensors recording the frequency of retreating footsteps, constantly scanning the surroundings comprehensively.
From temperature and humidity to all operational parameters of the power equipment, nothing was overlooked, making every effort to ensure the stability and safety of the power supply.
When someone, with a panicked expression, passed by the power supply room and inadvertently saw ROB1 still holding its post, their steps involuntarily halted. A complex, unreadable emotion flashed in their eyes.
Among them was deep admiration for its conscientiousness and unwavering dedication, as if seeing a warrior holding their ground on the battlefield without retreat; there was also a hidden sense of guilt for their own impending escape and abandonment of duty, their hearts struggling painfully between the fear of doomsday and the resolve to hold their post.
But soon, under the all-encompassing fear of doomsday, they hardened their hearts, turned, and hurriedly departed, disappearing into the chaotic crowd of evacuees.
5.5 Silence Descends
Within a few short hours, the base personnel had evacuated in waves, like a breaching tide. The once busy, orderly, and vibrant corridors were now left with only messy footprints of varying depths.
These footprints were like a silent epic poem, quietly recounting the panic and fear of people leaving in haste. In the laboratories, equipment continued to operate, emitting a monotonous hum that echoed in the empty, silent rooms, a sound like a lonely cry, adding to the bleakness and solitude.
Unfinished experiments and residual reagents still lay quietly on the lab benches. The semi-solidified nano-material reagents writhed eerily, as if silently waiting for someone to continue their unfinished mission. But all this, with the evacuation of personnel, became unreachable, a hopeless dream that could never be realized.
The unfinished circuit boards continued to flash, the prototypes of the Dyson cloud disruptors they were attempting to build; the genetically modified moss in the incubator was dying, the ecological restoration plan to combat the ionosphere void.
As the last person hurried out of the base gate with a look of panic, the base seemed to be muted, falling into a deathly silence. Only the abandoned equipment and unfinished research remained, like witnesses to history, silently becoming mute testaments to humanity’s tenacious struggle yet ultimate, helpless surrender in the face of this doomsday crisis.
And ROB1, still steadfastly holding its post in the power supply room, became the only "living thing" in this silent, tomb-like base. It stood there quietly, awaiting whatever unknowns were to come, as the gears of fate slowly turned once more.
