The blue light beam was not a lethal energy weapon; instead, it erupted in an intense flash accompanied by a deafening roar. Caught off guard by the sudden chaos, Black Wolf and his men were thrown into disarray as their horses panicked, shattering their formation.
"Now is our chance!" Lu Chen shouted, charging ahead. Huo Yao followed close behind, the two of them moving with lightning speed until they vanished into the night.
"Damn it, after them!" Black Wolf finally regained control of his startled mount. Watching the two figures flee, he seethed with rage and immediately led his men in pursuit.
In the desert, a sense of direction is everything. To shake off Black Wolf, Lu Chen deliberately chose complex terrain, weaving between the dunes with Huo Yao.
"The compass is malfunctioning!" Thomas, trailing behind them, turned pale. The needle in his hand spun wildly, spinning aimlessly.
Alice’s heart sank when she heard him. Losing one's sense of direction in the vast, featureless desert was essentially a death sentence.
"What's going on?" Huo Yao asked, her tone laced with anxiety.
"It might be magnetic interference," Lu Chen explained. "There are certain minerals in the desert that can disrupt the workings of a compass."
"What do we do now?" Alice asked anxiously.
"Follow me!" Lu Chen said. He looked up at the Xingchen, identified their heading, and continued forward.
However, misfortune never comes singly. Just as they had lost their way, an unexpected catastrophe struck.
The previously clear night sky was suddenly smothered by a mass of dark clouds. A gale began to howl, kicking up sand and rocks, plunging the world into darkness.
"A sandstorm!" Thomas exclaimed.
A sandstorm is one of the most terrifying weather events in the desert; to be caught in one is a narrow escape from death.
"Find cover, quickly!" Lu Chen acted decisively, grabbing Huo Yao to search for a shelter nearby.
The fierce wind whipped sand and grit against their bodies. Visibility dropped to near zero, and everyone struggled to open their eyes as the stinging dust blinded them.
"This way!" At the critical moment, Huo Yao’s sharp eyes caught sight of a depression in a nearby dune that appeared to be a natural windbreak.
The group did not dare to delay, stumbling toward the direction Huo Yao had pointed out.
As they drew closer, they realized the depression was actually the entrance to a cave, partially buried by the sand and wind; it would have been impossible to spot without close inspection.
"Get in!" Lu Chen roared, diving into the cave first.
The group scrambled inside one after another. The cave was not spacious, but it was enough to hold them all. As the wind and sand gradually buried the entrance, it shielded them from the raging storm outside.
Though they had escaped the immediate danger, no one felt any sense of relief. No one knew how long the sandstorm would last, or what might be waiting for them inside.
Huo Yao used the faint light to look around the cave, and suddenly, she gasped. "Look!"
She pointed to some strange patterns and symbols on the cave walls. They appeared to have been painted with some kind of pigment, yet they remained clearly visible despite the passage of time.
"Could this be..." Alice walked forward, examining the patterns and symbols closely. A look of shock gradually spread across her face.
In the dim light of the cave, Alice observed the wall markings, her fingers lightly brushing over the traces worn away by time.
"These patterns and symbols are very likely a variant of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs," Alice said, her voice trembling slightly with excitement. "Look here—doesn't this look like a scarab? And this one should be a symbol representing the sun god..."
Thomas leaned in to inspect the patterns. While he didn't know much about ancient Egyptian culture, he could faintly sense that these markings were extraordinary.
"Are you saying we’ve accidentally discovered an ancient Egyptian ruin?" Thomas exclaimed in awe.
"It’s very possible," Alice’s eyes sparkled with excitement. "Based on the style of these patterns, the location, and the environment of the cave, I suspect this might be the tomb of an ancient Egyptian noble that hasn't been discovered yet!"
"A tomb?" Huo Yao covered her mouth in surprise, her mind filling with legends of ancient graves and scenes from movies. "Will there be mummies and terrifying curses inside?"
Seeing Huo Yao’s fearful expression, Lu Chen smiled and ruffled her hair. "Don't let your imagination run wild. Those are just stories; in reality, there aren't that many curses."
"But..." Huo Yao tried to say something else, but was interrupted by Alice’s excited voice.
"If my theory is correct, there might be many precious artifacts and treasures hidden in this tomb!" Alice said, brimming with excitement. "This would be a major discovery for the field of archaeology!"
"Treasures?" Thomas's eyes lit up. Although he was a treasure hunter, he knew that tomb raiding was unethical. Yet, the prospect of discovering an ancient Egyptian noble's tomb was incredibly tempting!
Seeing the others' spirits lifted, Lu Chen felt a subtle sense of unease. He couldn't help but feel that this was not as simple as it seemed. The sudden appearance of the cave, the strange patterns and symbols—it all seemed to be implying something.
Meanwhile, not far away, Black Wolf and his men were struggling through the sandstorm. The wind roared, the yellow sand filled the sky, and visibility was extremely low. They were like a lone boat in a storm, at risk of being swallowed by the sand at any moment.
"Damn it! This cursed weather!" Black Wolf spat, his mouth full of sand, his eyes aching from the relentless grit.
"Boss, what do we do now?" one of his men asked with difficulty, his voice fragmented by the gale.
"Find somewhere to hunker down and wait for the storm to pass!" Black Wolf gritted his teeth. He knew that pursuing Lu Chen was impossible now; the most urgent priority was to stay alive.
However, the sandstorm came as quickly as it had left. A few hours later, the wind and sand died down, and the sky cleared.
Black Wolf crawled out of a sand dune, spat out a mouthful of grit, and looked at the empty desert before him, filled with frustration.
"Search! Even if you have to dig three feet deep, find them for me!" Black Wolf snarled. He swore that he would track down Lu Chen and his group and tear them to pieces!
After the sandstorm, the world seemed to have been washed clean, and the air felt much fresher. The sun scorched the earth, and the desert returned to its usual calm, with only scattered sand dunes hinting at the violence that had just passed.
Inside the cave, Lu Chen’s group sat huddled around a weak fire, their faces showing deep exhaustion. They had been trapped in the cave for a day and a night, and their food and water were running low.
"Are we trapped here?" Huo Yao’s voice trembled; she had never felt so hopeless.
"Don't worry, we will find a way out." Lu Chen held Huo Yao’s hand, offering her strength. He knew the most important thing now was to stay calm and not lose their heads.
Thomas and Alice tried to comfort Huo Yao, but they could not hide the anxiety on their own faces. In a place this desolate, getting lost meant death.
"Wait," Alice suddenly remembered something and pointed toward the back of the cave. "We haven't explored that part yet!"
A glimmer of hope returned to the group. They followed Alice to the back of the cave, which was much more open than the entrance. The walls there were carved with even more complex designs, faintly forming a mysterious pattern.
"These patterns..." Alice identified them carefully. "They look like a map!"
A map? Lu Chen and Huo Yao exchanged glances. Could this be the key to getting out?
"But this map looks very complicated. How are we supposed to read it?" Huo Yao asked.
"Let me try," Lu Chen said, walking up to the wall. "My gut tells me these patterns have something to do with the hieroglyphs we saw earlier."
Lu Chen began to study the patterns on the wall in detail, attempting to interpret them using the methods Alice had mentioned. Huo Yao stood by, holding a light for him, and without realizing it, the distance between them grew much shorter.
"Look, doesn't this pattern look like an eye?" Lu Chen asked, pointing to a symbol on the wall.
"You're right. The ancient Egyptians believed the eye was the window to the soul, representing insight and wisdom," Huo Yao added.
"Then, what if we take this pattern as a marker on the map?" Lu Chen’s tone held a hint of excitement.
Following this line of reasoning, the two of them worked step by step to decode the wall carvings. Time ticked by, and they grew closer and closer to unlocking the secret of the map.
Just then, a noise from deep within the cave shattered the silence...
