Miss Cai, a fitness enthusiast, was indeed interested in the Mainland because of her interest in martial arts. However, as Chen Rou’s muscles were far less defined than her own, she remained skeptical about whether Chen Rou actually possessed any real martial arts skills. Despite this, they shared a common hobby, and during lunch, Miss Cai began chatting with Chen Rou about her parents’ experiences back in the day—experiences which, from the perspective of the Mainland, were arguably less than honorable. Her parents, both scholars of some standing, had applied for an academic exchange program back in the mid-fifties, when Hong Kong and the Mainland still allowed travel between the two. They left, supported by academic subsidies provided by the Mainland government. Once they arrived in Hong Kong, they sold the family assets they had brought with them and used those funds, along with the government subsidies, to purchase air tickets to America.
