The car was large enough to hold two wheelchairs, and it was packed with plenty of fruit and soda. Every detail had been considered with the utmost care. This was Sutan’s first time visiting many of the famous landmarks, including the Forbidden City. Whenever Wang Baozhen felt up to it, she walked; when she grew tired, she used the wheelchair, and the mother and daughter explored with great delight. Zhao Yang and the old lady accompanied them every step of the way. Whenever Sutan looked tired, Zhao Yang would take over and push the wheelchair for her.
The old lady and Aunt Shen had likely visited these sites many times, but they showed no sign of boredom. They held Wang Baozhen’s hands and patiently guided them through everything. Inside the Forbidden City, there were booths for taking photos in period costumes, and the old lady insisted that Wang Baozhen join in. At first, Wang Baozhen was incredibly shy; she had only ever had her photo taken once in her life—on her wedding day—and never again since. The old lady told her that since everyone was gathered together today, they should just take some group photos. What began as individual portraits soon turned into a series of family snapshots.
By the time Sutan realized it, the old lady had managed to maneuver her and Zhao Yang together for a number of pictures. Sutan was wearing a Republic-era qipao, and Zhao Yang was dressed in a warlord’s military uniform; they truly looked the part of a young lady and a gentleman.
