Outside the Sanqing Hall, a large number of young disciples dressed in uniform cyan Taoist robes had already gathered in the plaza. Men and women alike, they stood in neat rows, some wearing Taoist caps and others with their hair coiled in knots. While the magical artifacts slung at their waists varied, most carried a three-foot-long blue-tinted sword.
My own line was the shortest, consisting only of Sun Zhongquan, Sun Qian, Xue Shisi, and myself. Clad in black Taoist robes, we looked somewhat out of place among the other rows.
Before long, a group of people emerged from the hall. They were dressed in yellow or purple robes and held fly-whisks. With expressions ranging from gentle to stern, their sharp gazes and graceful bearings gave them an air of being transcendent and otherworldly.
