Hariti, known as the Mother of Rakshasas, also called the Mother of Affection or the Mother of Joy, is one of the Twenty Devas, who serve as protectors of Buddhism.
This deity originated from a Buddhist legend carrying a tragic tale. It was because of this tale that she committed wrongdoing, yet it was also this very story that led to her becoming one of the Twenty Devas and a protector.
Legend has it that in ancient times, in the city of Rajagriha in the Western regions, the Buddha appeared in the world and held a grand celebration. Over five hundred people hurried toward the capital to attend the gathering.
