What is a Mountain Ghost?
This term first appeared in Chu Ci: The Nine Songs. In Han Chinese folklore, it generally refers to mountain deities, goddesses, spirits, and the like.
The first section of the poem primarily depicts the beauty of the "Mountain Ghost" from various aspects, such as "clothed in dodder and girdled with wild orchid," "riding in a magnolia carriage with a cassia-feather banner," and "clad in stone orchid and girdled with asarum." This vividly portrays the image of a "Mountain Ghost" as a natural daughter of the mountains and forests, while also hinting at her outer and inner beauty.
