The moon was bright and the stars were sparse. The moonlight fell like silver water. A sound, faint as a whisper, announced the opening of the door. Bai Wutong, lying on her side, opened her eyes but did not rise. Footsteps approached from the distance and came to a stop beside the bed. Chan'er, who had been sleeping on a small cot to the side, turned over. In her drowsiness, she caught sight of a tall figure in the room and was startled wide awake. She was about to scream when a flash of cold light sliced through the air, shearing off a lock of her hair. Chan'er was struck dumb with terror, sitting trembling on the cot.
