Duanmu Furong had not a shred of sleepiness. At first, she closed her eyes hoping to catch some rest, but sleep refused to come. Eventually, Duanmu Furong gave up trying; whether she slept or not, she would let nature take its course. Sleepless all night, she finally drifted off into a light doze just as the night passed and the roosters began to crow. Duanmu Furong woke up quickly, briefly laboring under the illusion that she was sleeping in her own bed. She rubbed her drowsy eyes. The scent of sandalwood lingered all around her, and the intricately carved openwork landscapes were fascinating to look at, making it feel as though she had truly been traveling through a picturesque countryside. Had it not been for the sounds coming from the courtyard, Duanmu Furong would have truly believed she was in her own bed.
