Chapter 10

1,336 words7 minutes read

Xú Yáo's pupils trembled slightly as she looked at the colossal creature before her, her mind instantly clearing.
What is this? A crocodile?
No, it has no legs. This is an alligator gar.
But how could an alligator gar breathe on land?
On the land before the lake, a pointed-jawed giant fish, about 6 meters long, was wriggling its way towards the camp.
Gōng Yīxíng also looked ahead with a look of surprise.
What tier of mutation is this size?
Its speed isn't fast, so what ability could it have?
It can even leave the water and breathe, is this also due to evolution?
In the brief moment it took the two of them to ponder, the entire camp burst into commotion.
"Aaaah! Quick, look at what that is in front!"
"Quick, run, it's coming this way!"
Screams and cries instantly filled the entire camp.
"Calm down!" a voice with imposing pressure rang out, and the chaotic scene fell silent.
Xú Yáo followed the sound. It was the school's overall commander, now holding a mutated amplifier: "Ability teams, assemble by number, cover others as they evacuate. Everyone else retreat towards the forest with the leaders."
Upon hearing this, everyone moved quickly. Xú Yáo and Gōng Yīxíng also moved forward with the crowd.
At this moment, Xú Yáo inadvertently glanced back and saw two teachers searching for something in the spot where she had just rested.
"Strange, the duck's quacking came from here just now."
"There's nothing here. Forget it, let's go back first."
The two teachers who had followed the duck's quack left. Xú Yáo, blending into the crowd, secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
Fortunately, the little duck was a single-use prop; it would disappear after its effect.
Otherwise, she would have had to explain how she had the prop.
Troublesome.
By now, the alligator gar had arrived close by. It shot out a water arrow, which struck the earth wall the leading teacher had put up for defense.
The earth wall wobbled but wasn't breached.
"Fire attack, prepare!"
"Wind element, follow up!"
Under the leadership of their respective teachers, the school team attacked the alligator gar that had opened its massive jaws, following orders.
Abilities flew through the air, a spectacular sight.
However, after the smoke from the first wave of intense attacks dissipated.
"Look, that fish is completely fine," a short-haired girl said loudly, pointing in the direction of the battle.
Someone immediately chimed in with terror.
"Oh god, the monster is enraged! Ah, our people are being attacked!"
"Help! It's shooting water arrows at us!"
The leading teacher's voice was rapid as he shouted: "Don't look back! Hurry and retreat towards the forest!"
Xú Yáo was moving forward with the crowd. The fatigue from being woken up made her look somewhat listless.
But hearing the shouts around her, she suddenly turned her head. When she clearly saw the battle, her eyes lit up.
Such high defense, the fish's scales are excellent materials.
This isn't an ordinary Mutated Beast.
It's a weapon, it's equipment, it's a necessity for survival!
Xú Yáo, who had been uninterested before, suddenly became excited.
Materials are scarce right now. If she missed this chance, she might not find such good materials again.
She had to try!
Unlike Xú Yáo, Gōng Yīxíng had been continuously observing the battle.
This fire element leader isn't very good.
His attack was too rushed, and the melee fighters behind didn't follow up.
Quite a bit of damage was wasted.
Gōng Yīxíng walked a couple of steps with the crowd. Looking back inadvertently, he saw Xú Yáo standing still, watching the battle.
What's wrong with her?
This is no time to be spacing out.
He walked up to Xú Yáo and gently nudged her with his elbow. "What's wrong?"
Xú Yáo came back to her senses and turned to Gōng Yīxíng, her eyes filled with longing: "Gōng Yīxíng, I want the alligator gar's scales."
Gōng Yīxíng's eyes flickered upon hearing this.
Are there any special properties to this fish's scales?
"Got it. Let's head over there first."
Soon, Gōng Yīxíng regained his composure. He nodded to Xú Yáo and led her away from the crowd.
Xú Yáo looked at Gōng Yīxíng, who readily stayed with her, and smiled gratefully at him. "The school only wants to cover the students' escape. Once they've evacuated, let's see if we can take down the giant fish. If we can't, we'll give up."
What a good person!
He didn't even ask why.
He'll definitely get a share of the equipment!
"Okay," Gōng Yīxíng replied, listening to Xú Yáo's words, and led her to a corner near the giant fish that no one was paying attention to.
The two of them observed the battle ahead. After more than ten minutes, another wave of attacks ended. Some obvious wounds began to appear on the giant fish, but at the same time, it became even more ferocious.
It turned and knocked aside several melee team members in front of it, opened its massive mouth, and began charging up a water arrow with significantly greater power.
Xú Yáo glanced back. The other students had already completed their evacuation.
Good, everyone else has evacuated.
The school probably won't try to tank this attack.
They should also prepare to retreat.
As expected, just as Xú Yáo was thinking, the imposing voice rang out: "Retreat!"
As soon as the words fell, several earth walls instantly rose around the alligator gar. The giant fish, caught off guard, was immediately trapped in the middle.
The school team members then rapidly retreated.
Soon they disappeared from the camp.
With a loud "boom," the earth walls were shattered by the powerful water arrow.
After emerging from the earth walls, the giant fish found that its targets had all disappeared. It angrily thrashed its tail.
Gōng Yīxíng nodded to Xú Yáo and, seizing the moment, unleashed his abilities and instantly moved forward.
His ability enveloped his short blades, and in a few strikes, he cleaved open the giant fish's scales, drawing a bloody gash.
The giant fish yelped in pain, turned around, spotted the small figure, and shot out a water arrow.
Gōng Yīxíng dodged flexibly.
Xú Yáo watched Gōng Yīxíng, who was engaged in a battle of speed with the giant fish.
She silently took out a spear-like weapon from her Space, her expression solemn, and aimed at the giant fish in front of her.
Just then, another agile, massive black shadow descended from the sky.
As it landed, huge clouds of dust kicked up around it.
"Cough cough..." Xú Yáo, caught unprepared, choked on the dust.
She quickly covered her mouth and nose. When she saw the scene before her, her pupils constricted.
In front of her was a giant cat about four meters long, staring menacingly in the direction of the giant fish.
"Gōng Yīxíng, come back quickly!" Xú Yáo exclaimed, not having time to observe closely.
Hearing Xú Yáo's voice, Gōng Yīxíng immediately broke distance with the giant fish and rapidly retreated to Xú Yáo's side.
He also looked surprised after seeing the giant cat.
Have animals evolved this quickly now?
What tier is this?
"How are you? Are you injured?" Xú Yáo quickly stepped forward and carefully examined Gōng Yīxíng. His hair was slightly disheveled, and his breathing was a little rapid.
Gōng Yīxíng shook his head: "No."
The two of them looked together at the two giant beasts in front of them.
Looking at the ears and long legs, it was indeed a serval.
If both giant beasts attacked them simultaneously, they wouldn't even have time to escape.
If they're dead, what good is equipment?
"I don't want the scales anymore," Xú Yáo said decisively, searching all around for the most suitable escape route. "We'll find an opportunity to retreat."
"Okay." Gōng Yīxíng nodded upon hearing this, pointing to a relatively dark area to the front right. "Let's go that way."
Just as the two were preparing to retreat quietly, the giant cat moved.
