Compared to a stewing hen, free-range chicken has a firmer texture without being tough, and it isn't overly greasy, offering a much richer flavor. Furthermore, Kong Cheng’s cooking skills are genuinely impressive; the chicken soup he prepared was fresh, fragrant, and delicious. Even someone like Gu Chenxi, who doesn’t particularly enjoy chicken meat (when boiled in soup), managed to finish half a drumstick and two large bowls of the broth.
It was clear that one chicken per person was too much for Kong Liu and Gu Chenxi. After Kong Liu finished the remaining half of Gu Chenxi’s portion, he was too full to eat any more rice. One whole chicken remained untouched; Kong Cheng and Liu Mengya split half of it, and the other half was given to the cook as an extra treat. A large pot of chicken soup had also been made, and Kong Liu, having already eaten half a chicken, gulped down three more large bowls. He was completely stuffed and couldn't even touch the red-braised pork or the dry-pot cauliflower on the table.
Seeing Kong Liu eating so quickly, Kong Cheng said with a hint of pride, "Your old man’s cooking is pretty good, isn't it?"
