In fact, for over a year afterward, Wang Datou and Shasha did not cross paths much. Their most frequent encounters were at the Training Hall, where they would occasionally pause to watch each other play a brilliant shot. From time to time, they would nod in greeting, acknowledging each other. Shasha was cheerful, optimistic, and overwhelmingly cute. Within a year of joining the team, she had gathered a legion of fans ranging from the head coach down to the cafeteria staff. She was also a natural social butterfly; almost everyone on both the Men's Team and Women's Team called her "brother" or "sister," and she even had "connections" in the neighboring badminton team. Her interactions with Datou, however, were rather sparse—or at least unremarkable. So when Wang Datou first heard her call him "Brother Tou," he felt a little surprised. Were they really that close?
