After the military training ended, the Chinese National Table Tennis Team was not given a break. Being an Olympic year, everyone had to dive straight into intensive training and preparation. Some of the younger players who had recently joined the team complained privately. Those who had no chance of playing in matches—or even making it into the Olympic squad—were relegated to being sparring partners for the main players, fetching water and serving tea, without gaining any real benefit for themselves. Wang Datou, one of the young players, had no such thoughts at all. Every day, he happily retrieved balls for the older team members, acted as a sparring partner, ran errands, and bought meals. That optimistic, cheerful Toutou with his swaggering smile seemed to have returned.
