Wang Chu'an placed the vegetables in the basket, secured the door, and taking Fang Shiyu by the hand, they first visited his grandparents, then his uncle's family, and his older brothers' families, saving his parents' home for last before heading back.
They did not return empty-handed: his grandparents gave them two catties of eggs, his aunt gave a small jar of her own pickled salted duck eggs, his sisters-in-law gave some dried fish, and his mother packed a small jar of her pickled vegetables for them to take home.
Back home, Fang Shiyu put everything away while Wang Chu'an reheated the leftover lunch, and then they sat down to eat.
