Early in the morning, Jiang Li eagerly waited at the entrance of the public security bureau to welcome her mother-in-law. Suddenly back out in the sunshine, the dazzling light made Jiang Hongdou involuntarily squint her eyes. Inside, cut off from the light of day, she had managed to endure the first few days simply by glaring and cursing her second daughter-in-law. But as the days passed, one after another, Jiang Hongdou's psychological defenses had long since collapsed. Living in constant anxiety day in and day out, when the police pulled her out of her cell today, she thought she was about to be taken out to get her just deserts, and was so frightened she nearly lost control of her bowels. It was only when she was pushed out through the front doors that she believed she was truly free.
