After stepping out of the mist-shrouded valley, the group found themselves facing a vast expanse of desert. The scorching sun beat down mercilessly on the earth, and sand was whipped up by the wind, creating hazy clouds of dust.
"This cursed place could really bake a man dry!" complained Sha Wujing. He wiped the relentless beads of sweat from his forehead, his clothes already soaked through.
Wukong wiped the sweat from his brow and said, "Stop your yakking and get moving!" Grasping the Ruyi Jingu Bang, he strode ahead with a resolute and fearless gaze.
Subodhi looked ahead with a solemn expression, nursing a vague sense of foreboding in his heart. The staff in his hand trembled slightly, as if transmitting some kind of danger signal to him.
The group made their arduous way across the desert. The sand beneath their feet was blazing hot, feeling as though every step would roast them alive.
Just then, a low roar echoed from the distance.
"Watch out, something's coming!" Yang Jian said alertly. His Third Eye snapped open, flashing with golden light as he tried to pierce through the blowing sand.
A pack of monsters resembling lions, but with flaming wings, charged out from the sandstorm, baring their claws and lunging at the group. Flames raged all over the bodies of these beasts, and a scorching heat wave washed over them.
"Just in time, my hands are itching for a fight!" Wukong declared, swinging the Ruyi Jingu Bang without hesitation as he charged forward. The staff whirled in his hands like a raging gale, engaging the monsters in fierce combat. Every blow carried the force of a thousand jun, driving the monsters back in waves. Yet these beasts were stubbornly resilient; no sooner was one batch beaten down than another surged forward.
Gonggong executed the Water Control Technique, attempting to extinguish the flames on the monsters. Waving his hands, streams of water gushed from his palms, transforming into a barrage of water dragons that lunged at the beasts. However, the flames on the monsters seemed to possess a special magic, and the water streams were vaporized into steam the moment they drew near.
Third Prince Nezha hurled the Universe Ring, which transformed into a streak of gold and struck a monster squarely on the head. With a resounding "bang," the creature was sent spinning in a daze. Yet it merely shook its head and lunged forward again with bared claws and fangs.
Seeing this, Subodhi chanted an incantation and waved his staff, shooting forth a beam of light that flashed across the sky like a bolt of lightning. Wherever the light reached, several monsters instantly turned to ash.
Working together, the group finally beat back this wave of monsters.
"It's not over yet, everyone be careful!" Subodhi warned. No sooner had his voice fallen than the ground began to tremble violently, as if some massive creature was about to burst from the earth.
A gigantic sand worm burst out from underground. It was as massive as a small hill, and it opened its bloody maw to expel a powerful blast of air that blew the group this way and that.
Wukong flipped through the air onto the head of the sand worm and brought the Ruyi Jingu Bang down hard. The staff landed heavily on the creature's head with a dull thud. Stung by the pain, the sand worm writhed and flicked its body, flinging Wukong away. Wukong performed a few aerial flips and landed steadily on the ground.
Yang Jian's Third Eye flew open, shooting a beam of golden light straight toward the sand worm's eyes. The golden light moved with extreme speed, yet it was blocked by the sand worm's tough outer shell, leaving only a shallow mark behind.
Subodhi pondered for a moment and said, "Attack its belly—that's its weakness!" His gaze remained fixed on the sand worm's abdomen, his staff glowing with light.
Hearing this, the group unleashed their strongest spells, attacking the sand worm's belly. Gonggong's water dragon, Nezha's Universe Ring, Yang Jian's golden light, and Wukong's Ruyi Jingu Bang converged into a formidable torrent of power.
Under the combined assault, the sand worm finally collapsed to the ground, unable to hold on any longer. It writhed a few times on the earth before going completely still.
Just as the group breathed a sigh of relief, a patch of black storm clouds materialized in the sky, crackling with lightning and thunder. The dark clouds churned like a giant vortex, as if trying to swallow the entire sky.
"What's happening now?" cried Sha Wujing in alarm. His eyes widened as he stared at the eerie spectacle in the sky, his heart filled with dread.
Descending from the dark clouds was an old man in black robes, holding a magic wand, his eyes flashing with a bizarre light. Shadows obscured his face, hiding his true features, yet the aura radiating from him betrayed a tremendously powerful opponent.
"None of you intruders shall pass through here!" declared the old man in black. His voice was deep and hoarse, as if echoing from the depths of hell.
Subodhi cupped his fists and said, "Senior, we are merely passing through and mean no offense. We hope you can grant us passage." His tone was earnest as he tried to reason with the old man.
The old man in black sneered. "Hmph, spare me the smooth words. Prepare to die!" With that, he waved his wand, and bolts of black lightning lashed out toward the group. The lightning streaks resembled giant black pythons, lunging ferociously at them.
The group scrambled to dodge and launched a counterattack. Wukong flashed out of the way of the lightning and swung the Ruyi Jingu Bang at the old man. The staff whistled through the air with terrifying force. The old man side-stepped effortlessly, a trace of disdain curling the corner of his mouth.
Gonggong wielded the mighty power of water to form a water barrier, attempting to block the black lightning. Under the onslaught of the lightning, ripples spread across the water screen, yet it stubbornly held its ground.
Third Prince Nezha seized the opportunity to hurl the Universe Ring, which transformed into a golden halo and flew toward the old man. With a casual wave of his wand, the old man batted the Universe Ring aside. The ring spun in the air a few times before returning to Nezha's hand.
Subodhi chanted an incantation, and his staff projected a beam of light that collided with the old man's wand, producing a deafening explosion. Light and darkness intertwined, momentarily distorting the surrounding space with their immense power.
The two sides reached a stalemate.
At that moment, the old man in black suddenly wore a sinister smile and muttered an incantation. Massive rune traps abruptly materialized across the ground, and the group inadvertently tumbled into them. Columns of black flames rose from the traps, searing their bodies.
"Hold on, everyone!" Subodhi shouted. His voice echoed within the traps, offering a glimmer of hope.
Wukong roared in anger, trying to break free from the trap, but found his efforts in vain. The monkey hair on his body curled under the searing heat of the flames, yet his gaze remained unyielding.
Yang Jian's Third Eye shot out a beam of golden light in an attempt to destroy the trap, but it only slightly subdued the flames. The golden light flickered within the trap, powerless to shatter this sturdy cage.
Subodhi calmed his mind and closely observed the runes of the trap, searching for a way to break it. His gaze was focused and cool, missing not a single detail.
After a moment of thought, he finally grasped the pattern of the runes. "Follow my lead and strike together!" Subodhi commanded. His calm and powerful voice instilled confidence in the others.
Acting on Subodhi's instructions, the group unleashed their spells simultaneously. The light of various magical arts converged into a powerful force. At last, the trap was broken, and everyone freed themselves.
Seeing this, the old man in black grew sullen. He had not expected them to crack his trap.
"I didn't expect you lot to have some tricks up your sleeves, but it's still not enough!" The old man waved his wand once more, summoning a horde of skeleton warriors. Wielding weapons, these skeletal fighters had empty eye sockets glowing with an eerie red light, looking terrifying indeed.
The skeleton warriors uttered spine-chilling chuckles as they charged at the group.
Wukong showed no fear, engaging the skeleton warriors in fierce combat. His Ruyi Jingu Bang wove back and forth through their ranks, shattering several skeletons with every strike.
Subodhi and the others also cast spells to assist Wukong. Gonggong's water torrents battered the skeleton warriors out of alignment, Nezha's Universe Ring knocked their weapons away, and the golden light from Yang Jian's Third Eye slowed their movements to a crawl.
Through their concerted efforts, the skeleton warriors were eliminated one by one.
Realizing the tide had turned, the old man in black turned and attempted to flee.
"Trying to run? Not so easy!" Wukong gave a Somersault Cloud and gave chase. With a swing of his Ruyi Jingu Bang, he cut off the old man's path.
"Spare my life, spare my life!" the old man begged for mercy. His voice trembled, stripped entirely of its earlier arrogance.
Subodhi stepped forward and asked, "Why are you blocking us here?" Suspicion and vigilance filled his eyes.
The old man sighed. "This desert is cursed. I, too, am controlled by the curse and cannot help myself." Pain etched his face, as if he were recalling unbearable past events.
Subodhi pressed on, "Do you know how to lift this curse?" His gaze locked onto the old man, hoping to glean useful information from him.
The old man shook his head. "I do not, but deep within the desert stands a mysterious temple. Perhaps the method to lift the curse lies there."
The group resolved to head to the temple to investigate.
Along the way to the temple, they encountered various hazards and hardships. Howling gales whipped up dust that blotted out the sky, making it impossible to keep one's eyes open. Sandstorms roared toward them like fierce beasts. Traps would also occasionally materialize on the ground, waiting to swallow up the unwary.
Yet the group did not retreat, inching closer to the temple step by step. Wukong cleared the path ahead, his Ruyi Jingu Bang whirling into an impenetrable barrier that kept the howling wind and sand at bay. Subodhi brought up the rear, casting spells to reinforce the others, bolstering their strength and stamina.
At last, they arrived before the temple.
The temple stood solemn and majestic, exuding a mysterious aura. Towering stone pillars supported the roof, and the walls were carved with ancient runes and patterns.
Cautiously, the group stepped inside.
Within the temple, a gigantic divine statue stood in the center. Dozens of zhang tall, the statue wore a majestic expression with piercing eyes.
The statue suddenly opened its eyes and demanded, "For what purpose have you come?" Its voice reverberated through the temple, deafening in its intensity.
Subodhi replied, "We have come to lift the curse of the desert." His voice was firm and sincere.
The statue fell silent for a moment before declaring, "To lift the curse, you must pass three trials." Its gaze swept over the group, as if assessing whether they were qualified to be tested.
The first trial was the Trial of Courage. A pack of ferocious beasts suddenly materialized within the temple; they were massive in size, with sharp fangs and murderous intent in their eyes. The group had to hold out against their attacks for the span of an incense stick.
Roaring, the beasts lunged at the group. Wukong showed no fear, charging to the vanguard to fight them to the death. Gonggong and Nezha also unleashed their spells to support Wukong. Subodhi remained in the rear, casting defensive spells to cushion the group from harm.
When the incense stick had burned down, the group, though battered and bruised, had successfully beaten back the beasts.
The second trial was the Trial of Wisdom. A complex riddle appeared before them, composed of countless runes and patterns whose mysteries needed to be unraveled.
Subodhi observed the puzzle closely, falling into deep thought. Wukong scratched his ears in frustration nearby, while Yang Jian and Nezha racked their brains as well. After much deliberation, Subodhi finally unlocked the key to the puzzle and successfully solved it.
The third trial was the Trial of the Heart. The group fell into an illusion, confronting their deepest fears and desires. Some beheld their failures and setbacks, while others witnessed the things they cherished most being ripped away.
Wukong saw Flower-Fruit Mountain destroyed and his monkey descendants massacred. He raged, trying to break through the illusion, but only sank deeper. Subodhi, meanwhile, maintained inner peace within the illusion, instructing Wukong to let go of his obsessions in order to escape it.
Guided by Subodhi, the group finally conquered their inner fears and desires, stepping out of the illusion.
The statue nodded in satisfaction and announced, "You have passed the trials. The curse is lifted."
With the statue's words, the curse's power in the desert gradually dissipated; the sunlight softened, and the raging wind and sand ceased entirely.
The group breathed a long sigh of relief. Their Journey to the West had taken another step forward. Yet they knew that further ahead, more challenges and unknowns awaited them...
