The master stepped onto the podium and motioned for the students to take their seats, signaling that the class was about to begin. Although Ali found these "celestial scriptures" utterly boring, she could not leave yet because of Sister Alanruo, so she slumped down in her seat once more with a dejected expression. Because of their status as princesses, Junuo and Changdi usurped the front-row seats, forcing the rest of the students to sit behind them. Those auditing the class, such as Feng Jiu, had to sit all the way in the back. Princess Alanruo was a princess herself, yet for some reason, she was not assigned a front-row seat. The master’s reasoning was that the front seating arrangements were already fixed, and there was no need to make everyone shift their seats just for Alanruo alone. (Seating was determined strictly by seniority and status; if Alanruo were to insert herself between Junuo and Changdi based on her rank, everyone else behind them would have to move back one seat.)
