Snow, like shredded cotton batting, poured down from the lead-gray sky. Winter in Beidahuang had always been harsh, but this storm was exceptionally ferocious. In the canteen, the steam from the thin porridge condensed into white mist in the frigid air. The educated youth from the south huddled by the windows, staring at the ever-deepening snow, their faces a mix of novelty and unease.
