However, those held in these cells were forced to sit in solitude, left to stare at the walls while waiting for the next interrogation. Not only were blindingly bright lights left on twenty-four hours a day, but every movement was observed and logged by those monitoring from behind the scenes. Even the most resolute wills could eventually be broken by such psychological torture. Sariel, however, remained completely unaffected. He sat cross-legged on the cot, hugging his knees, and chatted with the guard stationed at the door—though the superintendent remained indifferent.
