Xue Qitian watched his old friend’s retreating back, his thoughts consumed by his friend’s desperate hurry to save those children. This naturally brought his own poor granddaughter to mind. She had been subjected to such torture by Jin Xiang and her daughter within the Li Family. She had never known a father’s love, and now that her mother was gone, the seven-year-old child was wandering alone, suffering in some unknown place. He wanted to rescue her, but he could not even find where she was. The mere thought sent his mood spiraling into despair. He could not remain in Panze Town for too long. Although the people hunting him down had been temporarily beaten back, there was no telling when they might return. He hoped to see his granddaughter just once and then leave immediately, not wanting those hunters to discover her existence and bring a lethal disaster upon her. In truth, a century ago, the Xue Clan of Jitian City had been blessed with many outstanding descendants. Yet, as if struck by some curse, those Xue children who showed even a hint of promise rarely lived past the age of twenty, always dying prematurely for a myriad of reasons.
