Chapter 94

1,384 words7 minutes read

Brother Long is the sort of man who values money more than his life. He was a small-time thug in the county town, with plenty of underlings at his beck and call. Later, during a crackdown on organized crime, he was arrested and spent several years behind bars, only being released this year. But while he was locked up, his wife ran off with someone else, and his elderly parents were so incensed they died of grief, leaving only his daughter, who was being raised at his younger brother’s home. His brother and sister-in-law treated the girl poorly; she is thirteen years old now, painfully thin, and suffers from a mental illness. To pay for his daughter’s treatment, Brother Long is willing to do any job.
