There was no pity in his eyes, only a burning, boundless delight. As the soldiers of the Qi State roamed the city, screams and the spray of fresh blood were everywhere. An elderly man with hair as white as frost was cornered by three Qi soldiers. Like cats playing with a mouse, they took turns carving wounds into his body with their blades. The man was well-dressed, evidently a master of some wealthy household, yet he had been reduced to nothing more than meat for the slaughter. His cries grew faint, until at last, he collapsed into a mass of mangled flesh and gore. The water in the city’s inner canal had been dyed crimson, with countless corpses drifting upon its surface. Some were not yet dead, struggling in the water and sending up blossoms of blood. By the time night fell, Fengqiu City had become a city of the dead.
