1. Chapter 1: The Experimental Subject
A dark room. A single beam of light shot down from the ceiling, illuminating the only human inside.
Four delicate silver chains hung down from the roof, tethering the young woman’s limbs and restricting all her movement.
The young woman lowered her head, her long black hair cascading straight down to her ankles. She appeared to be fast asleep, but a voice soon echoed through the room.
"Subject 5802, wake up."
The voice was sharp and mechanical, sounding more like a machine than a person.
The young woman slowly raised her head, her eyes flickering slightly.
"We have completed your cellular modification. Now, feel the power flowing through your body. We need detailed data."
The young woman curled her lips in a cold sneer, dropping her eyelids and remaining entirely unmoved.
The voice suddenly turned shrill. At the same time, a flash of silver shot from the ceiling toward the young woman. A wave of excruciating pain instantly wracked her body. She clenched her teeth, her eyes burning with hatred as she glared fiercely at the mastermind hidden in the darkness.
Then, the voice suddenly shifted into an elderly tone: "Ah-Meng, I know you are in pain, but please believe me—all of this is for your own good."
"Hmph." The young woman let out a cold laugh. "For my own good? All of this is merely to satisfy your filthy desires!"
"Ah-Meng, you still refuse to understand my intentions. Earth's resources are completely exhausted now, and humanity is slaughtering one another to seize what little is left. In this chaotic world, only by becoming stronger can one survive. We need to unleash every ounce of human potential to gain a foothold in this world, and then rewrite the laws so that Earth can restore its proper order. I have spent decades painstakingly researching this, combining the power of the organization to discover the methods of cellular regeneration and breakthrough. Everything I do is for the entirety of mankind!"
"Hahaha, for mankind? Isn't all of this caused by your kind in the first place?" Long before Earth lost its civilization, this organization had already been plundering resources to pave the way for their schemes. How laughable that she had once deeply loved this scum!
"We selected thousands of experimental subjects, and you are the only one who survived. That proves your modification was a complete success. Ah-Meng, stand by my side, and you will soon witness the birth of a new world!"
The young woman’s calm eyes were a dead expanse, devoid of the slightest ripple. "What if I say no?"
The voice abruptly turned sharp: "Ah-Meng, you must understand—I am the one who modified you, and I am the one who can destroy you. Do not force me! You know I do not wish to raise a hand against you."
The young woman lowered her head, her lips grazing each other as she spoke in a voice as faint as a mosquito's buzzing.
"What did you say?"
"I will kill you!"
The young woman suddenly gave the silver chains on either side a violent wrench, the clanking of metal drowning out her words.
In the surveillance room, a grey-haired man stood up. "What is she doing?"
An experimental technician zoomed in on the feed. "She is trying to snap the chains."
A trace of helplessness flashed across the man's eyes. "After all these years, she still refuses to learn." Still, this was his Ah-Meng, wasn't it?
"Professor, what should we do?"
The man reached out a finger, caressing the still-youthful face displayed on the screen. "Since she is so full of energy, administer the final dosage as well. Ah-Meng, you will be my most brilliant masterpiece."
"But..." The technician hesitated. After all, this was their very last test subject; if she died too, all their work would have to start from scratch.
"Are you questioning my decision?"
"No... Understood." The technician pressed a red button. The silver chains instantly tightened, pulling the young woman's body into an X-shape. A mechanical arm extended from the ceiling, gripping a syringe filled with blue liquid as it closed in on her.
The young woman struggled with all her might. "Let me go!"
The next second, the needle pierced her skin, and the blue liquid was slowly pushed into her body.
A wave of intense discomfort forced her struggles to a halt, and she lost consciousness.
Darkness once again enveloped the entire room.
"How long will the drug take to take effect?"
"About twelve hours."
Long Kui chuckled. "Then let her sleep for a bit. When she wakes up, the world will be completely renewed by us."
Yet his wish was shattered completely. A few hours later, the underground laboratory began to shake violently.
The sky, perpetually shrouded in heavy smog, was suddenly pierced by a blinding, dazzling array of colorful light. Those wandering on the ground were instantly shattered into fragments by the beams of light.
The light pierced through the thick earth, shooting straight into the room where the young woman was imprisoned...
Soon, the tremors ceased.
When Long Kui rushed to the place where she had been kept, the entire room was in shambles. The half-foot-thick steel plates had been ripped apart by sheer force, all the equipment was destroyed, and the young woman had vanished into thin air.
She had disappeared, taking with her decades of his research achievements.
Long Kui collapsed to the ground, roaring toward the heavens: "Give her back to me!"
***
She was frozen awake. Her entire body felt as though she had been tossed into the Arctic, her blood frozen solid.
Liu Rumeng found this rather strange. She had clearly been locked in that sunless room, and had only lost consciousness for a moment—how could it suddenly be this cold?
Was it a side effect of that drug?
She opened her eyes to a vast, blinding expanse of white. She pushed outward with her hand, and with a *whoosh*, a drift of snow collapsed all around her. She had actually been buried alive in the snow.
Liu Rumeng sat up, seeing nothing but white snowy earth in every direction. Heaven and earth blended into a single shade of white, making it nearly impossible to tell where she was.
How did she end up here? And how had she gotten buried in the snow?
Just then, her sharp ears caught a sound coming from behind. Her body reacted on pure instinct as she threw out a hand and grabbed something flying toward her.
"Squeak, squeak, squeak!!!"
Even though she caught the snowball, the sheer force behind it almost knocked her completely unstable, frail as she was. Gathering her wits, she raised her head and suddenly saw several furry little creatures staring at her from not far away.
They were covered in snowy white fur, quite small—about the size of a toy poodle. Long tufts of fur blocked their eyes, making them look like little rolling snowballs from afar.
They hopped back and forth, constantly letting out squeaking cries as if furious that she had caught their snowball.
Liu Rumeng was stunned. What on earth were these things?
Wildmen? Monsters? Was she on top of Mount Everest?
Before she had time to ponder, a few more snowballs flew toward her. Though she possessed martial arts skills, her body was too weak to use them. After managing to catch only a few, she was knocked down onto the snow-covered ground.
With a series of pattering *shish-shish* sounds in the snow, the little creatures scurried over and hopped around her, looking extremely pleased with themselves.
One of them even jumped onto her face, stepped on her a couple of times, and then bolted off with the other little monsters.
Liu Rumeng wiped the snow from her face and struggled to a sitting position.
Perhaps due to those few stomps on her face, she suddenly felt her mind clear up a bit. Countless fragments of information flashed past her eyes like a roller coaster.
As she absorbed these memories, her heart grew increasingly bewildered. What was all this? Could this also be a side effect of the drug?
Otherwise, why would she possess the memories of another person?
She saw that her name was Yang An, fourteen years old. Because she had offended an exiled older sister and ruined that sister's marriage prospects, her enraged father had driven both her and her mother out to the desolate Realm of Ice and Snow. Her trip out this time had been to go down the mountain to fetch food rations for her mother, but she had unexpectedly encountered the mischievous Snow Demons along the way and had been buried alive in a snowdrift.
Liu Rumeng looked over this information in astonishment. These scenes were far too vivid to be dismissed as mere hallucinations.
2. Chapter 2: Life Experience
She suddenly stretched out her hands.
The hands before her, though rough and covered in various frostbite sores, still betrayed their inherent youthfulness. Liu Rumeng quickly inspected her clothing.
It was a jacket pieced together from tattered animal pelts. Though made of fur, it was of the lowest grade and riddled with moth-eaten holes, offering zero windbreak or warmth. Her shoes had even lost their soles, allowing snow to seep inside and freeze solid.
Liu Rumeng found it strange. If Long Kui wanted to put her through trials and had dumped her here, why make her suffer through physical injuries beforehand?
Didn't they treasure her as an experimental subject? After all, she was the only survivor out of thousands. If she died, the experiment could not continue.
Or had something gone wrong with the experiment? Had someone rescued her?
Liu Rumeng shook her head, quickly dismissing the thought.
Earth was already ruined, and the elites of every nation had perished in that chaotic war. The only survivors were ordinary citizens, women, and children. Aside from Long Kui's organization, there was likely no one else left on Earth capable of contending with them.
Just as Liu Rumeng was about to stand up, she caught sight of a face reflected in a nearby block of ice.
It was a sallow, rough-skinned face, with strands of hair hanging down her cheeks like dried hay. Her lips were chapped, and her cheeks were flushed red from the cold, yet those facial features were unmistakably her own.
It was her, and yet, not her.
Her left earlobe bore the "5802" tattoo branded by Long Kui's organization, but now, her right ear had an extra pierced hole that had already healed completely, suggesting it had been done a long time ago.
Liu Rumeng calmed herself, a bold notion suddenly striking her: could she have transmigrated?
But had she transmigrated soul-and-all, or with her physical body?
Reluctant as she was, Liu Rumeng had no choice but to accept a reality.
She had already died, and the Yang An named Liu Rumeng had also frozen to death. Through some twist of fate, she had transmigrated into Yang An's era.
Before her transformation into a test subject, Liu Rumeng had encountered plenty of bizarre and unfathomable things within the organization. Because of her exceptional physical fitness, Long Kui had taken notice of her, lured her in, and used her as a test subject.
She excelled at setting various traps to capture targets effortlessly, particularly having spent a great deal of time surviving in the wilderness and jungles, giving her top-tier survival skills.
Though her body was frail, it did not hinder her movements.
It took Liu Rumeng only a brief moment to set up a trapping pit. All she needed now was the final catalyst.
She feigned standing up, endured the stinging pain of her frostbite to take two steps, and then suddenly collapsed to the ground, letting out a sharp, miserable scream.
Sure enough, those squeaking cries quickly returned.
Just as expected—these troublemaking wenches loved watching a spectacle.
Liu Rumeng deliberately amplified her cries.
In moments, the pattering sound of footsteps came running toward her, accompanied by cheerful squeaks.
Liu Rumeng slowly curved her lips upward.
Just as the Snow Demons were about to reach her, they suddenly plunged into a deep, slick snow pit. The pit was exceptionally deep and slippery, its walls polished to a mirror finish by the elements, making it impossible even for creatures native to the snow to climb back out immediately.
The little fellows squeaked anxiously, hopping up and down like a bunch of bouncing ping-pong balls.
Liu Rumeng sat up, resting her chin in her hands as she watched them.
As one of them was about to leap out, she suddenly reached out, grabbing it by a throat-lock and seizing the most vulnerable part of its body. Her gaze turned sharp as she pressed it right up to her face.
"I am your master!"
"Squeak, squeak, squeak!" The Snow Demon thrashed wildly, kicking its little paws around. Its sharp claws grazed Liu Rumeng’s arm, instantly drawing blood.
Liu Rumeng remained entirely indifferent. Her voice dropped low, a chilling, gale-force gleam flashing in her eyes: "I am your master!"
"Squeak!" The Snow Demon's cries abruptly weakened.
With a cold, decisive motion, Liu Rumeng parted the long fur over its forehead, revealing a pair of jade-green, perfectly round eyes. They were wide and shimmering with moisture, practically adorable enough to be a crime.
Liu Rumeng finally understood why it wore bangs—with cuteness like that, all threat factor vanished completely. She barked a cold command once more: "I am your master!"
The Snow Demon instantly stopped crying, curling its short white tail and lowering its round ears submissively.
Liu Rumeng knew this was the sign of it being tamed.
Snow Demons only submitted to those stronger than themselves.
Using the same method, Liu Rumeng subdued all six Snow Demons trapped in the pit within moments.
Looking at the cute creatures crouched in a row before her, Liu Rumeng noticed subtle differences among them: some had larger ears, some had shorter fur, and others had particularly round bottoms.
Liu Rumeng gave a light cough. "Let's rank you by size: Daxue, Erxue, Sanxue... all the way to Liuxue."
With each point of her finger, the designated creature would let out a squeak. The sound was intoxicatedly cute.
Liu Rumeng did not yet know what abilities they possessed, because all of Yang An's knowledge had come secondhand from her mother.
Since Yang An was physically weak and had never successfully tamed a spirit beast, she naturally lacked experience.
Liu Rumeng could only probe cautiously: "Send me home."
"Squeak!"
The prettiest Snow Demon among them—Daxue—suddenly turned its back toward her. Amidst its continuous squeaks, its body actually began to grow larger.
Shape-shifting. Got it, she made a mental note.
Liu Rumeng mounted its back, while the others climbed onto her to shield her from the biting wind. Liu Rumeng closed her eyes and rested briefly.
After an unknown length of time, the Snow Demon abruptly stopped. Liu Rumeng slid down from its back and spotted a house amidst the heavy snow at a single glance.
Set against the endless expanse of silver, that solitary little cabin looked utterly desolate and pitiful, with not a shred of edible food anywhere near the doorway.
Talking about sending them here to reflect and repent—this was clearly a plot to have them freeze to death and save the family the trouble.
Liu Rumeng sneered. Such a father was truly worse than an animal.
Simply because her mother was merely a kitchen maid whom the father had forced himself upon while drunk, giving birth to her with low status, they were subjected to such cruel abuse. Her own father even wished for them to die to wipe away the family's shame.
Liu Rumeng clenched her fists, feeling a sense of grief for Yang An and pity for Mother Yang, who was implicated because of her. Had Yang An not been born with a weak body and a soft personality, they would never have fallen to such a state.
Since she had borrowed this body, she would live for her. Not only would she live, but she would also take back everything that rightfully belonged to her.
Liu Rumeng looked at the Snow Demon. "Is there any edible food in this snowy realm?"
Erxue straightened up, squeaked twice, and darted off at top speed, returning shortly with something gripped in its teeth.
3. Chapter 3: The Trash Fourth Miss
Liu Rumeng looked at the object. It was pitch-black and looked somewhat like a stone, causing her to frown slightly.
However, Snow Demons wouldn't fool her with something inedible. She took it and cautiously took a bite.
It lacked any distinct flavor, feeling almost like eating jelly.
The strangest part was that after she swallowed it, a surge of warmth welled up within her body, spreading from her stomach all the way to her limbs and down to the soles of her feet.
Even the pain from her previous frostbite faded away.
What was this?
Liu Rumeng instructed Erxue to fetch a few more blocks. Regardless of what it was, in this freezing wasteland, such a thing was simply too crucial.
Erxue brought back a dozen or so pieces. Liu Rumeng stored them away properly, instructed the creatures to stay out of sight, and then walked step by step toward the house.
Before she even reached the door, an anxious voice echoed from inside, faintly accompanied by a fit of coughing: "Is that you, A'an?"
"Mom, it's me."
"Cough, cough... why were you gone for so long? Mom was worried sick."
"The wind and snow were heavy, and the road was hard to walk." Following her voice, Liu Rumeng pushed open the door and stepped inside.
Instantly, a wave of biting cold rushed to meet her.
Liu Rumeng frowned, calmly scanning the interior.
The house consisted of only two bedrooms—one in the back and one on the side—with a small common hall in the middle. A table sat in the center, piled with unfinished sewing, alongside an overturned rice bowl, presumably the meal Mother Yang had saved for Yang An.
The woman was lying in the innermost room. The dim light made it impossible to see her face clearly, save for the sound of her unceasing cough.
In an instant, memories belonging to Yang An flooded back once more.
Yang An had always been frail and prone to illness. To nourish her body, her mother had wanted to venture out to hunt a few mountain pheasants, but had accidentally fallen down a slope. Though she managed to crawl back with sheer grit, her leg was left permanently disabled, and her lungs were damaged, causing her persistent coughing.
Apart from gathering food, Yang An's trip down the mountain this time had been to beg her father to send a physician for her mother—only to lose her life halfway there.
"Xiao'an, it's cold outside, isn't it? Cough, cough... Mom left some food for you, go ahead and eat, cough, cough."
Liu Rumeng glanced at the kitchen's grain basket, which held barely half a bowl of rice, and walked over to the woman's bedside.
"Mom, I ate outside."
"Cough, cough... Did they let you in?"
A flash of joyful surprise crossed the woman's pale face. Even under the torment of illness, one could still see traces of her former beauty—no wonder she had caught the eye of that brute.
"Yes. It's just that Father wasn't in, so we couldn't get a physician for you." To avoid distressing the woman, she had no choice but to play along with what the woman wanted to hear.
"Mom knows her own body; I won't die. But you've suffered, having to go over there and endure grievances."
"Not at all. They treated me very well. Mom, I brought you a pastry, try a bite."
