The beautiful landlady's face burned with a flush of heat, her heart a tangled knot of remorse and embarrassment. "How could I have been so muddle-headed? I went into the wrong room and scolded him viciously. When I recall the expression on his face—surprised, innocent, and even a little helpless—wasn't I being a bit too harsh?"
She wanted to find an opportunity to apologize to her tenant, yet she didn't know how to start. She worried that he wouldn't accept her apology, or that he would form a bad impression of her. She had no idea how to face him, feeling utterly humiliated.
Pacing back and forth in her room, the landlady wrestled with her conflicted feelings. She thought of numerous ways to apologize, but none of them seemed quite right. She considered giving him a gift, but had no idea what he liked. She thought about writing him an apology letter, but felt that was too cliché. She even thought about going straight to him, but lacked the courage...
