"However, he was diagnosed as fully recovered a year ago!" the female colleague added.
Gu Yang was stunned too. He thought back carefully, meeting the station chief's astonished gaze.
"Can I make a phone call?"
"Go ahead. But since you've recovered, you won't get away with the responsibility you owe!"
The fat woman burst into loud wailing once again.
Gu Yang picked up the phone, spoke a few words, and hung up. He sat leisurely in his chair and said, "Wait a moment, my people will be right here!"
The chief and the other police officers glanced at Gu Yang's shabby clothes and exchanged a unanimous look.
The chief pushed the female colleague aside, sat down at the computer, and started checking himself, muttering under his breath, "Only XYY syndrome? No other psychiatric disorders?"
Although it was a mutter, Gu Yang still heard it. His face darkened instantly.
The female colleague looked at the chief speechlessly as she continuously scrolled through Gu Yang's file.
Before long, Gu Weiguo rushed over, covered in sweat.
The moment he stepped inside, everyone in the room jumped.
Gu Weiguo had a fierce and menacing appearance: standing 2.1 meters tall, with tattoos covering his arms and bulging muscles, he radiated an overwhelming sense of oppression.
"What the fuck, is this shit never-ending today? Speak up, which blind bastard is it this time?"
Gu Yang jutted his chin toward the fat woman.
"What the fuck, looking to die, are you?"
"Hey, hey, hey~ What are you doing?" the chief blurted out, quickly standing up to intervene.
After all, the other police officers were trembling with fear and didn't dare say a word. If he didn't speak up, how could he maintain his authority as a leader?
Gu Weiguo raised his eyes to look at the chief. Just a single glance made the chief plop right back down into his seat.
"Call Shen Jiandong, dammit! Fuck!"
With that, he took out a cigarette from his pocket with extreme irritation, handed one to Gu Yang, and lit one for himself.
One of the police officers glanced at the "No Smoking" sign on the wall, wanting to say something, but ultimately held his tongue.
As for the chief, he naturally didn't dare say a word; he simply shrank his head back and went to make the phone call.
"What on earth is going on? How did you manage to get mixed up in two incidents back-to-back? Has your condition relapsed?" Gu Weiguo walked over to Gu Yang and asked, looking puzzled.
Gu Yang shook his head. "Just a tiny bit, I'm baffled myself. Some blind idiots insisted on running into me, what could I do?"
"I reckon you won't be able to stay here anymore. What a real pain. Once this is sorted out, forget about taking the college entrance exams—let's just pack up and leave right now, shall we?"
Gu Yang shook his head. "If I can't avoid it, I won't run. I can take care of myself now, you don't need to worry about me!"
"Hsss~~~" Gu Weiguo frowned.
"Do you think I want you coming back?"
Gu Yang gave Gu Weiguo a cold, detached look, his tone icy. "You'd better just drop dead out there—that way you can go keep my mother company sooner!"
Hearing Gu Yang mention his wife, Gu Weiguo's expression instantly darkened. He wanted to say something, but looking at Gu Yang's cold face, he let out a deep sigh.
"That other matter has been dealt with, thanks to the brothers helping out. If..."
At this point, Gu Weiguo looked at Gu Yang with worry. "If it's ever discovered one day, you'll have to look after yourself from then on."
Gu Yang didn't speak; he just kept smoking with a cold expression.
Seeing military and police vehicles pull in outside, Gu Yang stubbed out his cigarette. "I'm leaving!"
Gu Weiguo nodded and stepped forward to cover for Gu Yang, letting him slip away quietly.
Once outside the police station, Gu Yang looked up at the darkening sky and let out a slight sigh—what's meant to come cannot be avoided!
This time, instead of taking the bus, he found a hotel nearby and checked in. Then he sent the address to Gu Weiguo, but Gu Weiguo replied that he was going to see some brothers and wouldn't be coming back.
Gu Yang couldn't be bothered to care. He ordered a few delivery meals and started eating.
He thought about the half-a-million in his pocket, and the college entrance exams starting in just a few days. Forget it, he couldn't even be bothered to buy a place; he'd just rent one for a month and make a decision after the exams were over.
In the back of his mind, he wondered if the twenty yuan Gu Weiguo had on him would be enough. But then another thought crossed his mind, and the corners of his mouth curved up in silence before he pulled the covers over his head and fell fast asleep.
The next day, Gu Yang found an apartment of over 80 square meters. It was a two-bedroom layout, move-in ready, and quite nice.
He paid a deposit of one month's rent plus three months in advance and signed the lease right away. After that, he bought some daily necessities, along with meat and vegetables, and cooked himself a wonderful bowl of noodles.
Right in the middle of his meal, he heard a knock on the door.
He opened it to find Gu Weiguo.
Without asking how Gu Weiguo had tracked him down, Gu Yang walked straight back to the kitchen to finish his noodles.
Gu Weiguo didn't say a word either. He stepped inside, changed his shoes, and went to wash his hands first. Then he came into the kitchen to forage, took one look at the noodles left in the pot, and fixed himself a bowl.
After that, he started slurping it down with loud, messy noises.
This caused Gu Yang's brow to furrow in displeasure as he banged heavily on his bowl.
Gu Weiguo froze. Seeing Gu Yang's dissatisfied expression, he gave a silly smile and hurriedly lowered the volume of his slurping.
"How many times did my mother tell you about that? You still haven't changed!"
Hearing Gu Yang mention his wife again, Gu Weiguo fell into a daze and silently went to scoop another bowl of noodles. This time, there was practically no sound when he ate.
Gu Yang shook his head. After finishing his meal, he went into the living room, picked up a book, and prepared to read for a bit when his phone rang.
It was Wang Chenxi. Gu Yang's brow furrowed slightly.
"Gu Yang, where are you?"
"I'm at home!"
"Oh, you managed to rent a place?"
"Mn."
"My mom said... she said..."
Gu Yang's heart skipped a beat. "What did she say?"
"She said she was sorry about the other day. She didn't expect that you actually had a condition!"
"Oh, it's fine!"
"Can I... ask what kind of condition it is?"
Gu Yang fell silent for a moment. "XYY syndrome!"
"Ah? What kind of illness is that?"
"Look it up online! I'm hanging up, I'm reading!"
"Oh, okay. I hope you get a great score!"
"Thanks!"
After hanging up, Gu Yang picked up his book and began to read.
Ever since his mother passed away, he had developed this condition—though not entirely. It just shared similarities, because while this syndrome was congenital, his had been acquired later in life.
He had spent a year or two living at one of Gu Weiguo's friend's houses, nearly driving the entire family to a nervous breakdown. With no other choice, Gu Weiguo had taken him back.
Still, he was much better now; normally he didn't even need to take medication. He tried his best to keep to himself in isolation, staying far away from anything that might trigger his anger.
Yet, today of all days, he had run into two incidents in a row, both of which made his blood boil, and for a moment he just couldn't control himself.
"Ding~~"
The sound of a WeChat notification disturbed Gu Yang's reading.
Gu Yang picked up his phone and saw it was a friend request from Wang Chenxi. Up until now, his WeChat only had one contact: Gu Weiguo.
After a brief moment of hesitation, he accepted Wang Chenxi.
"Gu Yang?"
"Mn!"
"Oh, are you reading?"
"Replying to your message!"
On the other end, Wang Chenxi felt a sudden pang of guilt.
Wang Qian hurriedly urged her, "Gu Yang, is that condition you mentioned real or fake? How come the information I looked up says that if you have that illness, schools won't even accept you? And how was that whole situation handled? Why isn't there a single mention of it online?"
