Some people took the warnings to heart. Following the lead of the Cheng family, they busied themselves in the fields, cutting the chives—which were still sprouting vigorously—down to the roots, and pulling up all the young lettuce and spinach, dumping everything into their cellars for safekeeping. Others cursed the villagers for going mad along with the Cheng family: "What a waste! Ruining perfectly good seedlings. If the wheat is gone, what will we do for next summer's harvest? Are the Chengs gods or the Dragon King himself? Who says there’s going to be a blizzard just because they say so? Have you all lost your minds?" The villagers who followed the Cheng family felt just as anxious. But since the vegetables were already pulled and the grain was stored, there was no point in arguing further. They could only harden their hearts and snap back: "We don't care if your family lives or dies, and you have no say in the fact that our family chooses to believe the Cheng family."
