Cheng Dazhuang, Father Cheng, Cheng Yun, and Shiqi squeezed together on the kang in the main room, while Cheng Nuo, Mrs. Zhao, and Xiao Pan'er slept in the east room. By heating only two rooms, they saved a significant amount of charcoal.
It was Mrs. Zhao’s first time sleeping in the same room as Cheng Nuo. Though she felt a bit constrained, Xiao Pan'er’s chatter and laughter kept the atmosphere from being too awkward.
The four men in the main room, however, were a different story.
