The two guards changing shift exchanged a sinister smirk when they saw them come out, scooped up two handfuls of snow to put out the campfire used for warmth, and then ducked back into the tent. Damn it, even the lowly soldiers have been bought off. They are trying to freeze me to death! This was a very small encampment consisting of about twenty tents, surrounded by a ring of horse-drawn carts. The perimeter lacked even defensive obstacles like caltrops or spiked barriers, and the surrounding terrain was flat with no natural defenses to rely on. One look made it obvious that nobody intended to stay here for long.
