Two relieving sentries saw them come out and exchanged sinister grins. They scooped up two handfuls of snow to extinguish the campfire used for warmth, then ducked back into a tent. Damn it, even the foot soldiers have been bribed! They're trying to freeze me to death! This was a very small encampment consisting of about twenty tents, surrounded by a perimeter of horse-drawn carts. There were not even any caltrops or chevaux-de-frise set up on the outer edges. Furthermore, the surrounding terrain was flat with no natural defenses to rely on, making it clear at a glance that no long-term stationing was intended here.
