Madam Fang, however, showed no disdain; she picked up the large platter of mung bean cakes from the floor and placed them back on the tray. Once she had arranged them, she counted. There were thirty cakes in total—enough for everyone to have five. She carried the tray over to Old Madam Si and said softly, "Grandmother, the jailer must have been kind-hearted. You must be hungry, too. Please, have one first. We can all have five cakes each."
After saying this, she sighed and added, "I wonder how Fifth Sister is doing?"
