Early morning sunlight streamed through the gaps in the window, casting a warm glow across the desks in the government office. Lin Yu had arrived early, as usual, and set to organizing the previous day's work materials. Ever since joining the agency, he had maintained a conscientious and responsible attitude, eagerly taking on a multitude of tasks. From sorting through trivial documents to handling complex public grievances, he completed every assignment with meticulous care. This enthusiasm and drive allowed him to quickly stand out in the workplace, winning the high satisfaction of his superiors, who frequently praised him in public.
However, Lin Yu's hard work and stellar performance quietly stirred up resentment in one of his colleagues: Zhao Qiang. Having worked at the agency for many years, Zhao Qiang had long grown accustomed to a routine of sluggish bureaucracy and passing the buck. He spent most of his workdays gossiping and scrolling through his phone, going out of his way to dodge even the slightest hint of a troublesome task by dumping it on someone else. In his eyes, a job was merely a way to scrape by—there was no need to push oneself so hard.
Lin Yu's arrival shattered Zhao Qiang's cozy rhythm. Lin Yu's proactive nature made Zhao's own laziness and perfunctory attitude glaringly obvious. Zhao began to worry that Lin Yu's performance would make the leadership dissatisfied with him, ultimately threatening his comfortable little niche in the office. Thus, a seed of jealousy and bitterness quietly took root in his heart.
One day, the agency held a work meeting. The supervisor walked into the conference room with a serious expression, carrying a stack of documents. Clearing his throat, the supervisor said, "Comrades, we have received an important assignment regarding the preliminary research for urban infrastructure construction planning. This task has a tight deadline and heavy demands. We need everyone to pull together and finish it as quickly as possible." With that, he began distributing the workload.
When it came to Lin Yu, Zhao Qiang suddenly interjected, "Boss, Lin Yu here is capable and full of drive. I think putting him in charge of the most crucial and complex part is definitely the right move. As for tedious tasks like data collection and organization, I'm sure he can do them fast and well." A seemingly amiable smile hung on Zhao's face, but a flash of subtle cunning flickered in his eyes.
Lin Yu frowned slightly. He knew very well that the "crucial and complex part" Zhao mentioned was actually the most tedious segment of the project, plagued by severe data gaps. Not only would this portion consume a massive amount of time and energy, but the incomplete records also made it fraught with uncertainty and difficulty. Yet, he did not refute the suggestion on the spot, choosing instead to listen quietly.
After a moment of thought, the supervisor nodded and said, "Alright, Lin Yu is always diligent and earnest in his work. We'll assign that part to you. Zhao Qiang, you will assist Lin Yu with it." Upon hearing this, the smile on Zhao's face instantly froze, but unable to refuse in front of the boss, he had no choice but to agree with reluctance.
Once the meeting concluded, the colleagues filed out of the conference room. Zhao Qiang walked up to Lin Yu and sneered, "Well, well, Lin Yu, you really are the boss's pet now, landing such an important assignment. Still, this isn't something you can muscle through on brute enthusiasm alone. Don't drop the ball when the time comes, haha." Some of the surrounding colleagues looked embarrassed, unsure of how to respond, while others lowered their heads and pretended not to hear.
Lin Yu raised his head, met Zhao Qiang's gaze directly, and said calmly, "Brother Zhao, I'll do my best to complete the task. We're all working toward the same goal—if any issues come up, we can discuss and solve them together."
Zhao Qiang let out a cold snort and dismissed him with disdain, "You greenhorn, you really think you're omnipotent, don't you? I can't wait to see what kind of mess you'll make of it." With that, he turned and stalked off.
Back at his desk, staring at the mountains of paperwork, Lin Yu felt a twinge of pressure, but beneath it burned a fierce determination not to lose. He silently resolved to use his actions to prove himself and force Zhao Qiang and the others to look at him in a new light.
In the days that followed, Lin Yu poured his heart and soul into the work. He arrived early every morning and frequently stayed late into the night. To gather the missing data, he traveled everywhere, visiting numerous relevant departments and combing through vast amounts of historical archives and literature. He carefully studied every single document, letting no detail escape his notice. Whenever he encountered a problem he didn't understand, he humbly sought advice from more experienced colleagues, even if they had only arrived at the agency a few days before him.
As for Zhao Qiang, while supposedly assisting Lin Yu, he actually threw roadblocks in his path at every turn. He either intentionally dragged his feet and withheld the materials Lin Yu needed, or sneered at Lin Yu's reasonable suggestions, and even badmouthed him behind his back to other colleagues in an attempt to sabotage his progress and reputation.
On one occasion, Lin Yu needed a critical piece of statistical data and asked Zhao Qiang about it. Playing dumb, Zhao replied, "I have no idea. Go look for it yourself." Left with no other choice, Lin Yu had to track down the data all over again on his own. Only later did he discover that Zhao had possessed the information all along and simply refused to hand it over.
Faced with Zhao's obstructionism, Lin Yu neither grew angry nor gave up. He knew that anger solved nothing; doing the job well was the best possible response to Zhao Qiang. He adjusted his mindset and worked even harder.
As time went on, the submission deadline drew closer. Lin Yu's work gradually took shape, and he managed to put together a detailed first draft of the research report. Throughout the process, his hard work and persistence won him the recognition and support of many colleagues. Those who had initially taken a wait-and-see attitude toward him, seeing how earnest and responsible he was, voluntarily reached out to lend a hand and helped him solve numerous difficult problems.
Finally, the day arrived to report back to the leadership. Armed with his compiled report, Lin Yu walked into the conference room full of confidence. He articulated the research process, the problems discovered, and his proposed recommendations with crystal-clear logic. Every argument was well-founded, and every piece of data was accurate down to the last digit. The supervisor nodded repeatedly throughout the presentation and heaped high praise on Lin Yu's work.
Sitting to one side, Zhao Qiang wore an ugly expression. He had expected Lin Yu to make a fool of himself with this assignment, never imagining that Lin Yu would not only pull it off brilliantly but also win the unanimous acclaim of the leadership and his peers. Jealousy and remorse churned inside him; he regretted trying to trip Lin Yu up in the first place.
When the briefing concluded, the supervisor addressed the room: "Comrade Lin Yu has performed exceptionally well on this project. His diligence, responsibility, and professionalism are qualities every single one of us should emulate. I hope that in our future work, everyone can be as proactive and courageous in taking responsibility as Lin Yu."
Stepping out of the conference room, Lin Yu let out a long breath. He knew he had passed this workplace test. He also understood that future tasks would bring all sorts of difficulties and challenges, but he was no longer afraid. For he believed that as long as he maintained a positive attitude and worked hard, nothing could stop him from moving forward.
Back in the office, Lin Yu found Zhao Qiang sitting at his own desk with an awkward expression. Catching sight of Lin Yu, Zhao stood up, hesitated for a moment, and said, "Lin Yu, I was in the wrong before. I shouldn't have deliberately made things difficult for you. You're the bigger man—please don't hold it against me."
Lin Yu smiled. "Brother Zhao, that's all in the past. We're colleagues and we'll be working together for a long time. Let's hope we can unite, cooperate, and do an even better job moving forward."
Zhao nodded, a newfound respect for Lin Yu settling deep in his chest.
From that day on, Lin Yu's career at the agency grew smoother than ever. Through his own actions, he won the respect and trust of his colleagues, laying a solid foundation for his professional future. As for the friction between him and Zhao Qiang, it was thoroughly resolved by the incident, and the two gradually blossomed into a terrific working partnership.
