Chapter 7

Early morning sunlight streamed through the office blinds, casting golden stripes of light and shadow across the floor. Lin Yu arrived at the company early, sat at his desk, and took a deep breath, preparing to throw himself entirely into pushing the project forward. This project was of vital importance to him; not only was it crucial for his personal career development, but it was also a prime opportunity to prove his capabilities after joining the company.
Lin Yu opened his computer, pulled up the data and documents related to the project, and began to carefully cross-check them. His gaze was focused and resolute, missing not a single detail. However, as he delved deeper into the work, he gradually discovered a problem. There were unreasonable fluctuations in multiple places within the data, and some key indicators severely conflicted with the previously collected materials, which left him feeling quite puzzled.
Frowning, he checked the data repeatedly, and the doubts in his mind grew heavier. If these unreasonable data points were not resolved, the direction of the entire project could be misguided, with unimaginable consequences. Lin Yu decided to consult Zhao Qiang, who had been responsible for the initial data collection and organization.
Zhao Qiang's workstation was at the other end of the office. At that moment, he was leisurely sipping coffee while browsing the news on his computer. Lin Yu walked over briskly, tapped politely on Zhao Qiang's desk, and said, "Brother Zhao, I am looking at the project data and found that some parts look a bit off and do not match the previous materials. Could you spare a moment to explain things to me from your end?"
Hearing Lin Yu's words, a trace of imperceptible panic flashed across Zhao Qiang's face, but he quickly regained his composure, smiled, and said, "Oh, those data? There might have been some minor errors when they were compiled earlier, but it is no big deal. Just go ahead and work with the current figures; there is definitely no problem."
Sensing that Zhao Qiang's reply was rather perfunctory, Lin Yu felt his doubts deepen. He pressed further, "Brother Zhao, this is no minor issue. These data discrepancies could affect the direction of the entire project. Can you tell me in detail how the materials were collected at the time? I want to figure out what is actually going on."
Growing impatient and letting his eyes dart away, Zhao Qiang said, "I already told you it's fine. Why are you being so meticulous? You are new here and don't understand how some things work yet—just do as I say." With that, he lowered his head and paid Lin Yu no further attention.
Helplessly, Lin Yu returned to his workstation. In his heart, he knew that Zhao Qiang must have withheld some key information. Yet, with no other options, he had no choice but to temporarily follow Zhao Qiang's instructions and continue pushing the work forward on the basis of the erroneous data. Working overtime every day and consulting various materials in an attempt to find a solution to the problem, he only drifted further and further down the wrong path.
Days passed, and the project schedule fell severely behind. Less than half of the key tasks originally planned for this stage had been completed. Burning with anxiety and completely at a loss, Lin Yu began communicating frequently with Zhao Qiang, hoping to get some useful information from him, but Zhao Qiang always brushed him off with various excuses or intentionally misled him.
Finally, the day of the leadership's progress inspection arrived. A senior executive walked into the office with a solemn expression, walked straight to Lin Yu's workstation, and looked at the project progress displayed on the computer screen, their face instantly darkening.
"Lin Yu, what is going on here? Why is the project progress so slow? Do you have any idea how important this project is to the company?" the leader asked sternly.
Lin Yu stood up, lowered his head, and answered with a trembling voice, "Leader, I am sorry. It is my fault for not doing my job well. While pushing the project forward, I discovered issues with the data that conflicted with the earlier materials. I also asked Zhao Qiang about it, but..."
"Don't make excuses!" the leader interrupted Lin Yu. "If there is a problem with the data, couldn't you have resolved it yourself? You are the project leader, and lagging behind schedule is your responsibility. I don't care what method you use, you must complete the rectification within the deadline, or you will no longer be in charge of this project!"
The leader's words struck Lin Yu's heart like a heavy hammer. Watching the leader walk away, he felt filled with a sense of loss and self-reproach. Back at his desk, he stared blankly at the computer screen, where the dense rows of data seemed to transform into faces mocking him.
Lin Yu plunged into deep self-doubt. He began to question his own abilities: was he really unsuited for this job? Was he simply too careless, failing to discover the crux of the problem in time? Remembering the leader's harsh criticism and the strange looks from his colleagues, he felt a sharp pain in his chest.
Yet, deep down, Lin Yu possessed an unyielding spirit. He secretly vowed to find the root of the problem, complete the project, and prove his capabilities. Reorganizing his thoughts, he decided to cast aside the false information provided by Zhao Qiang and start sorting things out from the very raw materials.
He spent a vast amount of time carefully reviewing every single document and repeatedly verifying every piece of data. When he encountered things he did not understand, he asked the senior staff in the company for advice and even utilized his spare time to attend relevant training courses to enhance his professional knowledge.
During this process, Lin Yu also began keeping a close eye on Zhao Qiang's every move. He noticed that Zhao Qiang had recently been acting nervous and frequently contacting external individuals. A bold suspicion formed in Lin Yu's mind: could Zhao Qiang have deliberately withheld key information and misled the project's direction for his own personal gain?
To verify his guess, Lin Yu began gathering evidence in secret. Through various channels, he learned about Zhao Qiang's recent work activities and finally uncovered clues pointing to Zhao Qiang colluding with a competitor company. As it turned out, in order to secure a hefty payout, Zhao Qiang had intentionally tampered with the data, fed Lin Yu false information, and attempted to sabotage the normal progress of the project.
Armed with the evidence he had gathered, Lin Yu went straight to the leadership and told them the whole truth of the matter. Upon hearing this, the leader was deeply shocked and immediately ordered an investigation. Following verification, Zhao Qiang's offenses were substantiated, and he received the punishment he deserved.
With Zhao Qiang's issue resolved, Lin Yu could finally throw himself entirely into the project rectification work. Relying on his own efforts and professional knowledge, he gradually resolved the data issues, and the project began getting back on track. Within the deadline, Lin Yu successfully completed the project rectification, earning the recognition of both leadership and colleagues.
This experience matured Lin Yu greatly. Not only did he learn how to persevere and find solutions to problems in adversity, but he also came to understand the complexities of the workplace and the malicious nature of human hearts. He knew that the road ahead was still long and that he would encounter all sorts of challenges, but he was no longer afraid, for he now possessed sufficient courage and capability to face everything.
