Had it been any of those other rascals, they would have been scolded long ago, and perhaps even given a thrashing. Yet fortune is fickle. Not long after they stepped outside, the weather turned. The wind howled, and goose-feather snowflakes came drifting down in flurries, wrapping the earth in a coat of silver as if draped in white gauze. Though village schools in ancient times observed no winter or summer breaks, tutors would grant holidays whenever personal matters arose.
