I had originally planned to live on campus, but after Juyan was injured, that plan was quietly shelved. Juyan spent a week in the hospital. Every day, My Mom made my dad cook for him, and then she would take a taxi to deliver the meals. The stabbing incident had become My Mom’s greatest vulnerability. Where she had once been cold and dismissive toward Juyan, she now dared not keep up that facade; instead, she was unfailingly attentive and careful, bending over backward to please him. The lawyer had warned them that stabbing someone was a criminal offense. Even though both parties had reached a settlement, Juyan could change his mind at any time, and my dad would end up in prison. Juyan’s attitude toward her remained exactly as it had been: cold and polite. He didn't have a single word of complaint for my dad, either. Yet, he had us all trapped.
