Giant pythons have long inhabited the deep mountains of the Southwest, occasionally descending to devour village livestock. Hu Bayi had served in the border wars in the South, where he had not only heard legends of such giant snakes but had witnessed these behemoths with his own eyes. However, the python before them was larger than any he had ever seen or heard of—at least ten meters long, as thick as a water barrel, and resembling a hornless dragon. As it emerged onto the bank, it wound its way through the mushroom-shaped stones, knocking them over with its massive frame and creating a deafening clatter. Those on the bamboo raft held their breath, fearing they might disturb this "Dragon King." But the python did not wander far; after flicking its tongue, it quickly returned to the water and swam toward the raft. Hu Bayi, Shirley Yang, and Wang Fatty were incredibly tense. Wang Fatty was the first to ready his sword energy, Hu Bayi drew his weapon, and Shirley Yang raised her folding shovel in defense. Xu Lang hurriedly stopped them: "Don't panic. It’s not targeting us." Though they were skeptical, the three still obeyed Xu Lang’s lead. "I specialize in biological research," Xu Lang said in a low voice. "Trust me." Wang Fatty suppressed his murderous intent and whispered, "Master Lang, our lives are in your hands." Xu Lang nodded with a reassuring, "Don't worry."
