When the two relieving sentries saw them come out, they exchanged sinister grins, scooped up two handfuls of snow to put out the campfire used for warmth, and then ducked back into the tent. Damn it, even the foot soldiers have been bribed! They're trying to freeze me to death! This was a very small encampment consisting of about twenty tents, surrounded by a perimeter of wagons. There were no caltrops or spiked barriers deployed outside, and the surrounding terrain was flat with no defensible features—a clear sign that nobody intended to stay here long.
