The morning breeze carried a pleasant burst of laughter. The fat cat basking in the sun on the windowsill twitched its ears, looked up at the little girl not far away chasing a white "free-range chicken," lazy-mouthedly opened its jaws, and stroked its whiskers with a paw, preparing to resume its nap. Before Tom the fat cat could close his eyes, he saw the little girl accidentally tumble onto the lawn and burst into loud tears. Moving with an agility that belied his size, Tom leaped down from the windowsill, trotted over to little Alice, nudged the little girl with his head, and looked up with helpless resignation toward the young figure walking over.
