After dinner, they returned to the Gryffindor common room. Albert first needed to go back to the dormitory to feed his cat and then bring Tom down to the common room for some fresh air so he could socialize with the other cats; it was not good for Tom to be cooped up alone for too long. Fred, George, and Lee Jordan were unusually quiet as they read, the three of them needing to gather usable material for their Potions essay. They had no choice; on the very first day of term, Snape had assigned them an essay on moonstones, and it had to be handed in by their next Potions class. Albert had also mentioned that he might not have any free time later, so the three boys, having just finished eating, were forced to write their essays alongside him to avoid wasting even more time and energy doing it on their own another day. "The characteristics of moonstones and their uses in pharmacy—I think if we copy these in and write in a bigger hand, it should be enough to fill twelve inches."
