They were confident that, with the military-industrial might of the British Empire, they could certainly build a fighter jet superior to that of their counterparts. One had to remember that the world's best aero-engines during the Second World War had been developed by them. Though they were somewhat in decline now, they believed that a lean camel was still bigger than a horse. With their industrial base, they were certain they could catch up and surpass the others!
