Chapter 16

The curtains of the single patient room were pulled open by the nurse, and the morning sun poured in with warmth, illuminating the dust motes floating in the air, and also Lin Xi's slightly pale face. The gauze on her forehead was a reminder of the terror of the previous night, but what was more clearly imprinted on her heart were Shen Yanzhou's eyes, filled with lingering fear and preciousness, and his weighty words, "You are more important than nothing."
Shen Yanzhou indeed did as he said. He guarded the small reception room outside the patient room for almost the entire night, handling a deluge of calls and documents. Lin Xi was drowsy from the medication, but each time she briefly woke, she could see his upright back busy under the lights through the gap in the door, or hear him issuing commands in a low but decisive voice. That figure was the most solid barrier at the center of the storm, isolating the turbulent waves of the outside world, leaving her only a harbor for peaceful sleep.
In the early morning, Qian Weidong arrived with heavy dark circles under his eyes and a thick report. His gaze towards Lin Xi was complex and hard to read, a mixture of awe and a barely perceptible attempt to curry favor. "Secretary Shen, Team Leader Lin." Qian Weidong's voice was tired but exceptionally respectful, "The preliminary investigation results for the 'Root Mark' material issue are out."
Shen Yanzhou put down the tablet computer in his hand and gestured for him to continue. Lin Xi also struggled to sit up, but was stopped by a look from Shen Yanzhou. "According to your instructions for a thorough investigation," Qian Weidong opened the report, "we controlled the boss of the material supplier, Hóngdá Building Materials, Li Hóngdá, and the person in charge of the third-party testing agency, Xinan Quality Inspection, Liu Ming, overnight. Under intense interrogation, Li Hóngdá couldn't withstand the pressure and confessed."
He paused, glancing at Shen Yanzhou and Lin Xi, "It was Vice District Mayor Zhang Hong... no, Zhang Hong's secretary, Wang Qiang, who privately found Li Hóngdá and hinted that as long as he 'handled' this supply, Hóngdá would be prioritized for district engineering material orders in the future. Wang Qiang also instructed him that the submitted samples must be 'foolproof.' In order to curry favor with Zhang Hong, Li Hóngdá had a wicked idea. On one hand, he bribed the technician responsible for sampling and testing at Xinan Quality Inspection with a large sum of money to swap the submitted samples and issue a qualified report; on the other hand, he supplied low-priced, inferior bricks to the construction site, passing them off as qualified products. For the difference in price, he gave Wang Qiang and Liu Ming a large sum of 'benefit fees.'"
The ward was silent. Although they had expected it, hearing conclusive evidence pointing to Zhang Hong's key confidant sent a chill down Lin Xi's spine. Zhang Hong's methods were more direct and reckless than she had imagined. "What about Wang Qiang and Liu Ming?" Shen Yanzhou's voice betrayed no emotion. "Wang Qiang was intercepted by the police while preparing to flee the country. He is currently being interrogated. Liu Ming has confessed to his bribery and identified Wang Qiang as the intermediary," Qian Weidong added. "Additionally, one of the three thugs arrested at the South City Abandoned Brick Kiln Factory, a man named 'Scarface,' has also confessed. He admitted to being hired by an intermediary nicknamed 'Blackie' to 'teach' Team Leader Lin a lesson, retrieve the document bag, and if necessary... to 'clean it up.'" Qian Weidong's voice trembled slightly at the end, and he glanced cautiously at Lin Xi. "We are still investigating 'Blackie's' identity, but preliminary judgment is that he is also connected to Zhang Hong's faction."
Irrefutable evidence! Procurement fraud, bribery in quality inspection, attempted murder for hire! Zhang Hong, in order to attack his political opponents, did not hesitate to destroy a project benefiting the people, and even used criminal forces! His actions were heinous and outrageous!
Shen Yanzhou's eyes turned completely cold, like a blade quenched in ice. He stood up and walked to the window, looking out at the gradually awakening city. The sunlight fell on him, but could not dispel the chilling aura of killing intent. "The chain of evidence is secured, form a complete report. All personnel involved will be severely dealt with according to the law, with no leniency!" His voice was not loud, but carried immense weight. "Director Qian, personally deliver this report to the Municipal Commission for Discipline Inspection, and simultaneously report it to the main leaders of the Municipal Party Committee. At the same time, in the name of the District Party Committee Office, submit an urgent situation report to the Municipal Party Committee, requesting the intervention of the Municipal Commission for Discipline Inspection and the Municipal Political and Legal Affairs Commission!"
"Yes! Secretary Shen! I'll go do it right away!" Qian Weidong's spirit lifted, and he responded immediately. He knew this was Shen Yanzhou's clarion call for a full offensive against Zhang Hong's group! He had to keep up. "Also," Shen Yanzhou turned around, his gaze sharp as lightning, "all projects of Hóngdá Building Materials involved in Yun Chuan District government projects are to be suspended immediately and re-audited! Xinan Quality Inspection's qualifications are to be revoked immediately! The responsible personnel of the relevant departments involved will have accountability procedures initiated! The 'Root Mark' project is to immediately replace any suppliers with qualified and reputable ones. Director Qian, you will personally oversee this, ensuring quality and progress, and eliminating the negative impact as soon as possible!"
"Understood!" Qian Weidong jotted down the key points and quickly left the ward, his steps carrying an unprecedented sense of decisive action. He knew this was his crucial opportunity to redeem himself and realign himself.
Only Shen Yanzhou and Lin Xi remained in the ward.
Lin Xi looked at Shen Yanzhou's tall and resolute back, her heart stirred with complex emotions. There was anger at Zhang Hong's evil deeds, relief at the truth coming to light, and also shock at the iron-fisted methods of the man before her, who could manipulate the situation with a wave of his hand. He was a man of decisive action, striking with thunderous force when he moved, hitting the vital points. "Are you scared?" Shen Yanzhou walked to the bedside at some point, his voice much lower. Lin Xi shook her head, her eyes clear and steady, "With you here, I'm not afraid. I just feel... great! The sky of Yun Chuan is long overdue for a clear-up."
Shen Yanzhou gazed at her, seeing the lingering shock in her eyes, but more so, the resilience of someone reborn from disaster and her complete trust in him. This trust weighed heavily on his heart, and also gave him infinite strength. He reached out as if to touch the gauze on her forehead, but his fingertips paused in mid-air for a moment, finally landing lightly on the blanket, tucking the corner more securely. "Rest well," his voice had a hint of imperceptible hoarseness. "Leave the matters outside to me."
"Mhm," Lin Xi responded softly, feeling the warmth left by his fingertips, her heart filled with peace.
In the following days, the political landscape of Yun Chuan seemed to undergo a silent earthquake.
The joint investigation team of the Municipal Commission for Discipline Inspection and the Municipal Political and Legal Affairs Commission entered Yun Chuan District with great fanfare, taking away Zhang Hong and several of his confidants for "assisted investigation." The news of the official arrest of Wang Qiang, Li Hóngdá, Liu Ming, and others was quietly released through official channels, but various rumors had already spread like wildfire. Hóngdá Building Materials was sealed off, several government projects were suspended for review, and officials aligned with Zhang Hong lived in fear, silenced.
Qian Weidong pushed forward the resumption of work on the "Root Mark" project and the selection of new suppliers with high efficiency, personally supervising the construction site with an unprecedentedly serious and proactive attitude. He knew that this was his chance to make amends and prove his worth.
As for Lin Xi, under Shen Yanzhou's almost "forced" orders, she received ample rest in the hospital. He would come every day for a while, sometimes at noon, sometimes late at night. He no longer only talked about work; he would ask if her head was still dizzy, if her appetite was good, and even had his secretary send over some light and delicious meals. He still spoke little, but that silent protection and companionship made Lin Xi feel more secure and warm than any words could.
TV news began reporting on the restart of the Yun Chuan District Industrial Transformation Command. In the footage, Shen Yanzhou appeared calm and capable, reporting the latest progress plans to provincial and municipal leaders, with Qian Weidong and others diligently taking notes. Lin Xi watched the radiant man on the screen, then thought of him clumsily tucking her blanket at her bedside, and couldn't help but curl her lips upwards, her eyes misting over. She longed to return to his side, back to the battlefield that belonged to them, full of challenges and hope.
A week later, after a comprehensive check by doctors confirmed she was out of danger, Lin Xi was finally discharged from the hospital.
It was Shen Yanzhou's driver who came to pick her up. The car did not take her directly to her residence but drove towards the District Committee Building. "Team Leader Lin, Secretary Shen is waiting for you at the Command Center," the driver said respectfully.
Lin Xi's heart beat a little faster. She looked out at the familiar streetscape, the sun was bright, the streets were clean, and the branches of the old pagoda tree swayed gently in the breeze. After the baptism of a storm, the sky of Yun Chuan seemed to be even bluer and clearer than usual.
The car drove into the District Committee compound. As Lin Xi stepped into the familiar office building, she keenly sensed the change in atmosphere. The usual dullness and caution had been replaced by a tense and energetic atmosphere. People hurried by, their low conversations mostly about new projects and new policies.
She walked directly towards the back of the corridor to a brand-new office – the office of the Head of the Comprehensive Coordination Group of the Industrial Transformation and Upgrading Campaign Headquarters.
The door was open.
Lin Xi stood at the doorway, taking a deep breath. The office had been set up, clean and bright. On her desk, several of the latest documents and project progress charts were neatly arranged. And the most striking sight was the man sitting on a temporarily added chair opposite her desk.
Shen Yanzhou.
He wore a crisp white shirt, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, his head lowered as he concentrated on a document. Sunlight filtered through the blinds, casting soft shadows on him. Hearing footsteps, he looked up.
Their eyes met.
His gaze was as deep as ever, but the coldness and distance that had once made Lin Xi's heart race had been replaced by a deep and warm glow. In that glow, there was relief, anticipation, and an unspoken understanding and... sense of belonging, unique to them. "You're back?" Shen Yanzhou put down the document and stood up. These three simple words seemed to contain a thousand unspoken words.
"Yes, I'm back, Secretary Shen." Lin Xi walked into the office, her steps firm, a bright and powerful smile blooming on her face, "Ready to join the fight at any time."
Shen Yanzhou looked at her, at the faint, healing scar on her forehead, at the rekindled fighting spirit and brilliance in her eyes. He couldn't help but curve his lips slightly, a very brief but genuine smile. "Not a fight," he corrected, his voice low and clear, carrying a new sense of shared strength, "but construction."
He picked up the most prominent document on the desk and handed it to Lin Xi. "Welcome back to the team, Team Leader Lin. This is the 'Yun Chuan District High-end Equipment Manufacturing Industrial Park Planning Draft (First Draft).' Our new battlefield; we'll conquer it together."
Lin Xi took the weighty document, feeling the warmth of the paper under her fingertips, and also the significant trust and future conveyed in his words. Outside the window, the sun was shining brightly.
The dawn had passed, and new construction had truly begun. And she would walk alongside him, shoulder to shoulder.
