Faint, warm light spilled across the ancient flagstones, casting the long shadow of Professor Snape’s black robes. Devereux followed closely behind, his heart a mixture of nervousness and anticipation.
They walked through winding, twisting corridors. Portraits lined the walls on both sides, their subjects chattering away—presumably it was time for their social rounds—and seemingly observing this master and apprentice in silent scrutiny.
Occasionally, they encountered stone-plinth knights. Devereux looked at them with satisfaction; these stone guardians were entirely like real people, with what looked like soft skin and hair, while also giving off a deeply reliable presence. Their gazes were steadfast, their strides steady, maintaining a high level of vigilance even in the quiet of night. Whenever these knights brushed past him, Devereux always felt an urge to step up and greet them or ask a few questions. But Professor Snape was like a cold gust of wind, walking straight past without the slightest intention of stopping, nor any inclination to discuss why these knights had appeared. Devereux secretly wished Snape would ask; he wouldn't mind seeing Snape look shocked again. Of course, Snape would do no such thing.
