Crookshanks and Hedwig were very mature pets.
They mobilized almost all the pets in Hogwarts, even including the pets belonging to the newly arrived first-year young wizards, to conduct the most thorough inspection in every corner. Pet matters, of course, had to be resolved by pets.
The only unhappy one was Filch.
