Take gold, for example. It possesses an extremely high intrinsic value not simply because it can serve as currency, but also because it is a material of immense worth in its own right.
To put it another way, even if it were not a precious metal capable of serving as currency, its scarcity and excellent array of properties would alone be enough to endow it with extraordinary value.
