Tom was, for the most part, a man who listened to reason when in the presence of Lived.
After Lived’s dissection of the situation, Tom had abandoned the idea of joining the Acolytes. Whether Grindelwald could succeed or not was one thing, but given Tom’s age and his meager current abilities, if he really got involved with that crowd, he might not even survive long enough to grow up. Having fully realized his own limitations thanks to Lived, Tom was, at this point, remarkably self-aware.
And so, the two of them temporarily took up residence at the Hog's Head Inn, waiting for the start of the school term while practicing magic separately.
