To describe Kwun Tong as sparsely populated would not be an exaggeration at all.
Kwun Tong is one of the largest districts in the region. In terms of sheer surface area, it ranks within the top five, narrowly missing the top three. Yet, its population is inversely proportional to its size. Because so few people live there, many parts of the district resemble undeveloped, backward villages.
However, the core of Kwun Tong has seen decent development—certainly faring better than famous impoverished areas like Wong Tai Sin. Since the eighties, the opening of the Kwun Tong MTR station brought a leap in economic growth and population. But because its foundation was so thin, Kwun Tong never managed to develop into an economic powerhouse like Causeway Bay or Wan Chai, let alone a premier district like Tsim Sha Tsui.
