By the time they reached Cross Mountain, it was all over. Late the next afternoon, Potter and the others found Lily and a comatose Peter at the base of a towering cliff. Lily was barely propping herself up with the Sword of Gryffindor, looking disheveled and frail, still wearing a bright yellow floral kitchen apron. Behind her rose the sheer rock face, marked by a deep black gash embedded in the brownish-yellow stone—evidently a sword slash. Beside the mark was a high splash of dried blood. Potter quickly brought his broomstick down, jumped off in a panic, and rushed to Lily's side.
