Voldemort had a fairly profound understanding of magical runes. The reason his proficiency in magical runes was not exceptionally advanced stemmed from two factors: first, Alaric's secrecy, as he had not handed over more books on magical runes to Voldemort, though how he had managed to fool Voldemort in the process remained a mystery. Second, Voldemort was a conventional wizard, in whose eyes magical runes were nothing more than a miscellaneous branch of knowledge derived from magic—a tedious trifle that relied solely on intuition and comprehension. Before long, he located the magical rune that Alaric had concealed—the very one Alaric had used to modify the Dark Mark. Alaric had used a fragment of the magical rune to hoodwink Voldemort, while sealing the complete rune away within a secret room.
