The river slanted, the moon sank, and all sounds died away. Layer upon layer of heavy clouds played tug-of-war with the stars, fighting for a speck of white at the edge of the horizon. The clouds won, claiming ownership of the moon for the night. They drifted, slowly swallowing it up, turning the white into a bluish-purple black.
