They chased, so I ran. My goal was to lure them out of the Royal City. I had already evacuated all the commoners from the counties and districts behind us, so not only was there no food, but they couldn't even scrounge up the most basic necessities. We led them on a chase for over a hundred miles that first day. We rode oxen, and they followed on horseback. Several times, they nearly caught us, but whenever they got close, we would hurl wine bottles and set fires, focusing entirely on harassment. By dusk, I secretly had ten thousand men slip out of the city to lie in ambush. At the crack of dawn the next day, we abandoned the city and fled. Their main force followed in hot pursuit. By afternoon, my men ambushed their grain supply train. I couldn't take the food, so I had it all torched.
