After a few days of careful preparation, the day I was to assume office as City Lord finally arrived. I woke up early, and aside from a quick workout, I busied myself with changing into a fresh set of clothes. Even I, someone who usually paid little attention to attire, dressed with exceptional solemnity today. Outside the City Lord's Mansion, people had been bustling about since the early morning. Of course, this would also be our last collective Lunar New Year celebration together. After this year, we would no longer celebrate as a single collective. Everyone would have their own homes, and by next year, all slaves would have houses too—there would be no more slaves left. Nor would we need to prepare meals for them anymore; this was likely the last year the slaves would enjoy such service. From now on, they would have to cook their own New Year's Eve dinners. I suspected many slaves still did not know how to cook for themselves. But these were minor issues; I had set up a threshold anyway—one point, and you learn it all, taught from scratch.
